Basics

Esserfae are from Neithellia, the third planet in the Neiraellia System.

The current population is 3.2 billion. Some esserfae life off-planet, but they only make up 0.666% of the population. The remaining 99.334% live on Neithellia.

Merchants, Craftsmen, Farmers

Caretakers are only considered slightly higher than Merchants, Craftsmen, and Farmers.

High Council

Esserfae who run their Courts or the central government.

Archdruid

Esserfae who work in religious institutions and care for and protect the environment.

Government Officials

Esserfae who work in the governments of Courts, or for the central government.

Druids

Esserfae who work in religious institutions and care for and protect the environment.

Soldiers

Esserfae who guard and protect other esserfae.

Scribes

Esserfae who work in literary, linguistic, and historical fields.

Elders

Esserfae who work in religious institutions and care for and protect the environment.

Caretakers

Esserfae who work in religious institutions and care for and protect the environment. May have other jobs on the side.

Merchants

Esserfae who own and/or work at shops. Buy and sell products.

Craftsmen

Essefae who create products and/or complete services.

Farmers

Esserfae who work on and/or own farms. Grow and care for crops and/or animals. They also take care of all other plants on their property, even if it isn't part of their crops.

Language

Their langugae is called Nivalin.

Spoken

Their spoken language sounds like bird sounds/calls (chirps, warbles, hoots, shrieks, etc.), frog and toad sounds (croaks, hisses, etc.), musical instruments (handbells, flute, cimbalom, vibraphone, harp, etc.), and nature sounds made by plants and non-living objects (rustling of leaves, babbling of a brook, roaring of fast winds, etc.).

Their spoken language sounds nonsensical to outsiders, and some sounds they make are impossible for others to copy due to the unique way their bodies work.

Culture

Food

Esserfae use the plants on their back to photosynthesize, but they can't survive off just that, they require nutrients from other animals and plants. They are mesocarnivores, meaning their diet consists of 50–70% meat. Their diet is made up of 50% meat, 40% light, and 10% plants.

What animals they eat varies primarily on what is available in the area. Esserfae will eat just about any animal that they can fit into their mouth, with a small amount of exceptions for religious reasons. With their jaws being made of multiple bones and being able to stretch open much wider than other sentient species, their respiratory system and digestive system being separate, the shapes and arrangement of their teeth, and the extra appendages in their mouth, they can eat a lot of animals. They prefer to eat their food whole if they can, but will tear apart animals that are too big for them to eat whole or that would be difficult or impossible to digest with the amount, size, and/or density of their bones and exoskeleton (carapace, chitin, etc.).

Esserfae have deep respect and care for the plants on Neithellia. They can eat just about any plants and plant products -- fruits, fungi, legumes, cruciferous, marrows, etc. --, but what they eat is limited based on a strict set of religious rules for the consumption of plants.

They do not typically cook their food, preferring to eat things that are as fresh as possible, but will preserve and cook as needed or desired.

Sometimes, esserfae will go anywhere from a day to two weeks without eating meat or plants. It depends on their age, appetite, activity levels, and how much they ate previously.

Esserfae rarely eat around others, partially to reduce conflict over food, and partially because opening their mouth around others is seen as rude and aggressive. Other than eating, they only ever open their mouths during conflicts (fights with other esserfae, fights with other sentients, fights with and while hunting animals) and as an intimidation tactic, so there's a lot of negative associations and connotations.

Parents may eat with their children during their sprout, seedling, and some or all of their child years. While a sprout they need to drink milk, and in their seedling years they may need some help eating and can't eat certain foods. In their child years the parents may not be comfortable yet letting their kids out of sight, especially with food. During late childhood and early teens they'll typically start eating on their own more and more, especially as they start finding and preparing their own food.

Relationships

Esserfae are polygamous. With their being three distinct sexes + everyone who doesn't fit into the ternary, polygamy is necessary for their survival. 24.73% of the population is Estceix, 27.35% of the population is Estlaer, 23.94% of the population is Estaith, and 23.98% of the population is Estiavin. There is roughly the same amount of each group, and it averages out to 25%.

Reproductive compatibility and social status are prioritized in relationships.

Estceix + Estlaer + Estaith pairings are the most common. Estiavin + Estlaer + Estaith, Estceix + Estiavin + Estaith, and Estceix + Estlaer + Estiavin pairings where the Estiavin has the reproductive organs needed for the three of them to reproduce are second. Pairings with different combinations of sexes and pairings with more esserfae involved are next. Second rarest is pairings with only Estiavin involved. The rarest is pairings with only one of the three distinct sexes involved (Estceix only, Estlaer only, Estaith only).

Most esserfae will have 2 main partners (or more) who they are actively and deeply romantically and sexually involved in year round, and either stick to just those two or have some casual partners who they are involved with sexually during stage 2 of their estrous cycle (or stage 2 of the estrous cycles of others). Random hook ups are often frowned upon, especially higher up in the hierarchy, but not taboo.

Compatible Social Groups

For religious and social reasons, typically only certain groups get together romantically and sexually.

Society - Crime and Law

Punishments for Crimes

Social

An esserfae who has committed a crime may face social repercussions for their actions.

Economic

An esserfae who has committed a crime may be forced to give up money, properties, services, and/or time to local/federal governments or specific people/organizations.

Incarceration

An esserfae who has committed a crime may spend time in a jail/prison.

Physical punishments can be grouped into Social or Economic as there is often overlap. For example, a common physical punishment that also has social ramifications is horn/antler breaking. A convicted criminal will have their horns/antlers cut off and filed to nubs (often 1/2"-2"). The antlers/horns will be allowed to grow back after the initial break, or the esserfae will have to have the process repeated once their horns/antlers reach a certain length for as many times as needed to carry out the full punishment. Since esserfae horns/antlers do not shed and grow in a pattern determined by their DNA (size, shape, number of tines, etc.), this punishment does not leave permanent damage, but may leave lasting social damage as the esserfae can be easily identified during and after the punishment.

On the other hand, an esserfae may be forced to complete a labor intensive service for a person or group (business, organization, government, etc.). While, physically, something is being done, this also has economic repercussions as it impedes the esserfae's ability to do their job and impacts their income.
