CVS just agreed to pay $1.8 million to settle a case in which it failed to Google the name of an employee it hired even though the man said on his job application that he had a criminal conviction. Athanasios Mastrokostas was a pharmacist who had been banned from doing business with Medicaid, Medicare and other federal health care programs in 2005 due to a felony conviction. When he applied for a job at CVS, he mentioned the conviction on his application forms, according to the New Jersey State Attorney General: CVS Pharmacy failed to investigate whether Mr. Mastrokostas was a federally excluded pharmacist and allowed him to work as a pharmacist filling these prescriptions even though Mastrokostas indicated on his employment application that he had been convicted of a crime.

CLEVELAND - CVS Caremark Corporation, a nationwide retail pharmacy and health care company based in Woonsocket, R.I., has reached a conciliation agreement with U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to resolve charges of race and national origin discrimination raised by a former EEOC Commissioner under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal agency announced today. Following a lengthy investigation, the EEOC found it probable that between 2002 and 2010, the company, through use of personality tests/assessments during the application process, adversely impacted applicants based on race and national origin.

WTHR has obtained an internal document the nation's largest drug store chain has been trying to keep secret. It reveals why Walgreens is now turning away some customers and refusing to fill their prescriptions. "We were told patients are not supposed to know we're using [this]," said pharmacy technician Marianne Ryan. "But I don't think it should be some big secret. This form had to be filed out by the pharmacist, so I think patients should know what's on it." Ryan is talking about what Walgreens calls its Good Faith Dispensing Policy checklist. The controversial checklist – and the policy behind it -- first came to light earlier this year after 13 Investigates reported many Walgreens customers are facing problems when trying to get prescription refills for pain medication.
