The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was recently recognized for its use of a background check program used to screen applicants.Lt. Paul Burks accepted the Portrait of Success Award during the GCIC Savannah Conference. According to Burks, the sheriff’s office implemented the N-Dex Agency Coordinator in 2015. With the program, the sheriff’s office has access to records from other law enforcement agencies including federal, state and local agencies. “It’s a national data sharing program managed by the FBI and it allows Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies to share information,” Burks said. “So basically, what that means is for let’s just say a police department in Nevada, if they participate in this program, then it allows us into their records system so we can search their records for names, license plates, any kind of information we can search. It will go in every law enforcement agency that participates, it goes into their record system and searches that.”
Columbia County Deputy Matthew Murrell has been with the department for ten years. Murrell says he loves his job and the department he works for. But, he adds getting here wasn't easy. "It's very extensive to get on with the Sheriff's Office. They do a background check, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination," said Murrell. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says deputies like Murrell are hard to come by. "We're getting applications. The problem is we're not getting the quality applications and really for every one person that we offer employment, we probably turn down nine or ten," said Columbia County Major Steve Morris.

The records bureau is glad to assist with criminal history background checks through the State of Georgia only. A more detailed background check would require you to obtain fingerprint cards for submission. The record bureau does not offer fingerprinting to the public and you would need to select an outside company that offers that service. Please be prepared to have a government-issued picture ID and your original Social Security card. If your Social Security card is unavailable, please go to the Social Security Office to obtain this information before requesting a background check.
