If the Department determines that you have potentially disqualifying crimes or conditions, a weighing test will determine whether you are eligible for the position for which you are applying. If you have any criminal history, you should provide the following information in Box 26: What happened when you were arrested and/or convicted. What did you have to do because of the arrest or conviction? Serve probation? Pay restitution? List any treatment, counseling program, alcohol or drug rehabilitation, education, and training. List employment demonstrating responsible behavior. How is your criminal history relevant to your job or position? How has your life changed since the criminal history? Why do you believe you are no longer a risk to vulnerable people? Attach documentation to support the information provided.

The University of South Florida System (USF System) is committed to protecting the safety, security and health of its students, employees and others, as well as safeguarding the interests of the USF System. As part of its efforts to create a safe work and study environment, the USF System requires that a criminal history background check be conducted on prospective employees as a condition of employment. Criminal history background checks may be required for students or volunteers depending upon assignment. A criminal history background check will be conducted upon current employees when required by law or if there is a reasonable belief that the employee has been convicted of a crime without reporting it to the Division of Human Resources (“Human Resources”).

As a part of its ongoing efforts to support the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) research into non-criminal justice background check issues, SEARCH was asked to disseminate a series of questions to the states regarding these types of checks. The Intelligence Reform legislation passed by Congress following the findings of the 9/11 Commission requires the Attorney General to prepare a report to Congress on various aspects of non-criminal justice background checks. SEARCH was asked to distribute these questions to its Membership Group to assist with the preparation of this report. The twelve questions were split between two sections; the seven questions in Section A dealt with name-based checks, and the five questions in Section B with fingerprint-based background checks.
