Off Your Face

My Bloody Valentine 1990

Off Your Face is a highly personal favorite of mine. The song's sound is very characteristic of MBV shoegaze, containing the usual electric guitars, bass, drums, and backing vocals, except distortion, feedback, and other effects are layered on top to create ear-filling noise. These effects produce a continuous warm undertone to much of MBV music, and keeps listeners absorbed into the song, distracted from the complications of reality.

The few Lyrics on Off Your Face are a confession of an individual's falling-out of love. She expresses that she can no longer be who her partner wants. She  Calls them a "crybaby", which insinuates that one's previous display of vulnerability is no longer welcome in the relationship. This is further expressed by the singer stating "Pretend that I Adore you".

Also to clear any confusion, Kevin Shields is American.

Particular lyrics

Hate

Pretend that I

Adore you

Hate

What do you take me

For you

Crybaby, shame

You're in love with the game

Swallow the pain

Nothing else will remain

Why I chose this song for this week

This song has always been a challenge for me to listen to as the lyrics evoke strong emotions tied to moments in my life which are further amplified by the aggressive, noisy, yet beautiful melody and composition of the song.
