Beware

Death Grips 2011

Beware is the Opening track off of Death Grips' first album Exmilitary. The track opens with a clip of Charles Manson speaking on the motives behind his life. Much of Manson's speech along with the remainder of the song express praise for individualism. The music is most prominently made up of a drum set with constant hi hats, and an electric guitar that only plays one, held-out, chord. Trumpets, background singers, and electronic sound effects can also be heard throughout the song.

Throughout the song MC Ride expresses the spiritual journey he's embarked on in which he wants to live for himself, and relies on no other people or objects to decide his faith. In the song ride depicts himself descending into darkness and the unknown, which is necessary to gain knowledge on one's own.

If you're not already empowered by the music, then the lyrics will seal the deal.

If not, listen to it again.

I AM THE BEAST I WORSHIP

Genres: Experimental, Hardcore Hip-Hop, Electronic

Particular lyrics

What am I, gonna run around and act like I'm some teenybopper somewhere, for somebody else's money? I make the money, man, I roll the nickels, the game is mine!

I deal the cards

I close my eyes and seize it (Seize it)

I clench my fists and beat it (Beat it)

I light my torch and burn it (Burn it)

I am the beast I worship (God is watching)

I am the beast I worship

Why I chose this song for this week

When I first heard a Death Grips song I found it a bit difficult to listen to as it is noisy and chaotic in nature. However, I liked the uniqueness of their sound and continued digging through their discography. Exmilitary was one of their albums that helped me figure out the band, which included the song Beware. Although hectic and full of symbolism, it was all explainable if given enough attention to the details. The song follows a man who abandons his humanity, giving in to the anger and frustration in his mind and becoming a sort of monster among men.
