Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want (Deftones Cover)
Deftones 2011
After each album recording session, Deftones record cover songs from artists who had an influence on them. These covers were compiled into an album titled B-Sides & Rarities on October 4, 2005. “Pls, pls, pls, let me get what I want” is the 11th track off the album and is a cover of the like-titled song by The Smiths.
The tone of the song is obviously much more aggressive than the original version. The instrumentation is made of an electric guitar, with grungy, noisy deeper tone on it, a second electric guitar with a more standard rock tone, a third Electric guitar with a “flickering” high pitch to it plays outro, a bass, & heavy drumming. All together, this cover of the song is quite distant from the original when it comes to the emotions it produces. While The Smiths were in a way pleading with God to catch a break from their misery, Deftones, on the other hand, are demanding from God that their requests be met. I enjoy both versions a lot, and feel that they each serve a powerful purpose for different scenarios.
Genre: Heavy Alt-Rock
Particular lyrics
Good times for a change
See, the luck I've had
Can make a good man
Turn bad
So for once in my life
Let me get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Why I chose this song for this week
Deftones have mentioned that they were influenced by The Smiths, and play some of their songs during recording sessions. It was really cool to see a heavy rock band take influence from a band as distant as The Smiths.
