The First Taste

Fiona Apple 1996

The 6th song off Fiona Apples first studio album expresses her emotions towards someone who she wants to let love her. The title of the song hints at this theme, as she wants the individual to give her a taste of what is, hopefully, to come. The song has a very upbeat melody to it, but it still feels as if the listener is waiting in limbo. The bongos and other percussion give off a ticking feeling, as if time is passing mindlessly.

Particular lyrics

I do not struggle in your web

Because it was my aim to get caught

But daddy longlegs, I feel

That I'm finally growing weary

Of waiting to be consumed by you

Give me the first taste

Let it begin

Heaven cannot wait forever

Darling, just start the chase

I'll let you win

Why I chose this song for this week

This love song sang by Fiona Apple gives us a perspective of love that feels genuine and makes much more sense being sang by a woman than a man.
