Organ donation is the process by which an individual consents to donate their organs to one who is in desperate need of them. Organ donors can be living or deceased.
Patients are placed on a wait-list under a specific priority category. If a brain dead person is registered as an organ donor and/or their family would like to donate their organs, an extensive evaluation process begins. After a series of matching between the donor and patient including blood type, size of the organ, etc., the surgery for organ recovery begins while the future recipient undergoes pre-operational procedures.
With the shortage of organs, more than 23,000 people in California alone, are in need for an organ transplant. Throughout the United States, there are almost 114,000 people on the list. Every 10 minutes, another name is added to the list, and onn average, 20 people die every minute waiting for an organ
Anyone, regardless of previous medical conditions, can be an organ donor. A minor requires parental consent before doing so. A living person is allowed to donate their organs, as long as it is evaluated and it is one that is not necessary for survival. This includes: one kidney, one lung, and portions of the liver, kidney, or intestines. If a person is declared dead, and they are a registered donor, donation will be considered. For organ donation to be possible, deceased or alive, the organs and/or tissues, must meet certain standards. There are factors that may prevent donation, such as a the state of the organs or tissues.
The organ and/or tissue recipient's quality of life is drastically improved. Not only do they have a better and longer chance of survival, but the emotional and mental well being of the patient can increase. Additionally, patients are often able to participate in more daily activities, such as sports, hiking, etc.
This question is a well-known myth regarding organ donation. In fact, it is one reason why people prefer not to sign up as a donor. They believe that health care professionals wont try to save a life if they known that the patient is an organ donor. This is not true. These professionals will and must do everything they can to save your life, no matter if you are registered as an organ donor. Your life comes first. Only after doctors declare the patient patient brain dead, they can be evaluated for organ donation
