Technical data:
“7 Herbs” is an interactive web-artwork. It uses artificial intelligence and complex systems modeling to generate unique images of “protection plants” (see below). It captures sounds from a microphone device to enable user interaction. The artwork runs in any device that support modern Web browsers (e.g. Firefox, Opera, Chrome). Its dimension varies according to the interactor device screen. The artwork was created in 2022.
7 Herbs - Cristiane Duarte, Rolf Simões and Rosangella Leote
"7 Herbs" is an interactive web-based artwork that evokes elements of Brazilian popular culture. It refers to a mystical belief that some plants can bring protection to home, soul and body. It mixes the natural intelligence of life with the artificial intelligence
The AI was training using a database of the seven herbs: Rosemary, Basil, Snake plant, Rue, Petiveria, Pepper, and Dumb cane; as well as Nettle. They are used by the Umbanda tradition, mixed with indigenous knowledge and Brazilian syncretism. The Nettle is common in Brazil and when alive is toxic. However, when used as tea, it has benefits to health.
The visual results are produced from a system of particles guided by an AI generated flow field under Perlin's noise. The work was developed in the p5js framework (authorial processing environment for the Web). The artwork can detect the names of plants from the interactor's speech and generate a unique image each time.
The seven herbs for the soul and the herb for the body are reinterpreted by the imagery generation of their respective plants from an AI that offers unique compositions. The visual results are produced from a system of particles guided by an AI generated flow field under Perlin's noise. The work was developed in the p5js framework (processing environment for the Web).
