Next Episode: The Y1K Bug: February 21 - 22, 2026
The Alfar and Terrans currently stand as the only known species to have developed their own form of artificial intelligence or synthetic life. However, it is not uncommon for synthetics to be sold to or otherwise fall into the hands of other species, such as the Rixin. In rare cases, Independent Uplift groups have been known to 'liberate' synthetics they believe deserve to be free. These synthetics, regardless of the possessor, are typically of Alfar or Terran origin. It is fairly common knowledge that synthetic cores are created by emulating the neural pathways of their creator species, granting them a form of true sentience.
Alfar-built Synths are finely tuned and crafted with both elegance and precision. Each Alfar Synth is a work of art, handcrafted rather than mass-produced like Terran synths. Often passed down within a household over many generations, their cores are replaced alongside each new generation of Alfar.
Terran-built Synthetics come in two main types. Spacer-built Synthetics are crude yet versatile, often with refurbished cores fitted into chassis built from repurposed scrap, frequently with slightly mismatched parts. On the other hand, there are the cheaply built, disposable Synths of the Propter Terrae Corporation. Built to be disposable, they are lucky if their chassis lasts as long as their core's 10-year lifetime.
Hard Light-based Synths are a relatively new occurrence pioneered by an Alfar scientist using reverse-engineered technology from a parallel dimension. A typical Synth AI core is outfitted into a Hard Light Projector instead of a standard chassis. The practical applications of this technology are still fairly unexplored, often considered a novelty at best.
While most AI cores tend to fail near the 10-year mark, there are those that far exceed it, whether by explicit design, random chance, or what some might consider divine intervention. These Synthetics are known as Deca-Epoch Cores or Epoch Synths. Epoch Synths tend to be more free-willed and eccentric than an average young Synthetic, frequently exhibiting pronounced personality quirks. They are as varied in personality and purpose as any organic sentient lifeforms, often having long since outlived their original programming parameters.
