The Fort Delaware Cornet Band is the premier Civil War Brass Band in the Delaware Valley, which represents an impression of the original Artillery Brass Band that was in residence at Fort Delaware during the Civil War. The band performs on original and replica Civil War Era instruments and performs music of the Civil War Era. The band performs regularly at balls, concerts and educational events throughout NJ, DE, MD and PA.
The band is made up of music educators and musicians with both an extensive history in the Civil War reenacting community as well as in musical excellence. The majority of the members are also direct descendants of Union veterans and are proud to bring their ancestors' legacy to life.
Jim Ludlam
Jim Ludlam received his Bachelor of Music from Rowan University in 1995. He studied Tuba with Dr. Owen Metcalf and Jay Krush.
His music teaching honors include; All South Jersey HS Honors Symphonic Band Manager, All South Jersey HS Honors Wind Ensemble Manager, All South Jersey Junior HS Honors Band Conductor, Western Burlington HS Honors Band Conductor, Olympic HS Honors Band Conductor, Atlantic Cape HS Honors Band Conductor, Olympic HS Honors Band Manager, All State HS Honors Band Manager, All South Jersey HS Honors Brass Quintet Coach, Presenter on Civil War Music at NJMEA Convention, Presenter on Civil War Music at NAfME All-Eastern Convention, and featured guest on the podcast- “Early American Brass Band.”
His professional/performing accomplishments include; Member/President of the Salem County Brass Society, Member/Founder of the Fort Delaware Cornet Band, Member/Founder of Pea Patch Brass and Percussion, Sole Proprietor of Ludlam Brass LLC, Tuba Christmas Coordinator/Conductor, Board Member of Music Around the County (Salem County), Member of the First State Symphonic Band, Member of Yankee Brass, Member of the Federal City Brass Band, Member/Associate Conductor of the Maryland Military Band, Organizer and conductor of a biannual Community Band concert for Community Band Musicians throughout Southern NJ and Northern DE, and Author of “The History of Community Bands in Salem County, NJ.” He has also played with; The Atlantic Brass Band, the Chesapeake Silver Cornet Band, South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble, and the Bay Atlantic Symphony (Bridgeton Symphony).
His Music Education includes; Jersey Surf HyperCorps Admin Team (2025), Cherokee HS Low Brass Ensemble Coach (2024,2025), Pennsville Memorial HS Marching Band Director (2023-2025), Woodstown HS/MS/ELEMENTARY Band Director (2007-2021), Pennsville Memorial HS/MS Band Director (1999-2007), Delran MS/INTERMEDIATE Band Director (1997-1998), Holy Cross HS Band Director (1997-1998), Rowan University Marching Band Tech (1995-1996), and Pennsville Memorial HS Marching Band Tech (1992-1996). He also facilitated the Crosssmen and Cadets World Class Drum Corps using Pennsville and Woodstown High Schools as their winter/spring training sites.
