The Montgomery County Concert Band was founded in 1995 by director Steve Frederick and business manager Paul Ferla. The driving force behind this was the belief by Paul and Steve that the North Penn community could sustain a community band and that there was a large pool of musicians in the area from which to draw. The success of the band over the past 30 years has proven their intuition to be correct.
The size of the band has remained basically the same, with members coming and going, but with a large core of members who have been with us for 15 or more years. Nine of our current members are Charter Members. After the passing of Steve Frederick, the directorship was handed over to our current director, Charles Neidhardt.
Over the years, the Montco Band has performed more than 300 concerts for audiences in the area, including performances at the annual state conference of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (4), and the National Conference of the Association of Concert Bands (2). In addition, the band has featured numerous soloists such as Carol Jantsch (Principal Tuba with the Philadelphia Orchestra), renowned jazz saxophonist Andrew Neu, and trombonist Scott Shelsta, along with local residents. The band also has sponsored compositions by Travis Weller, Patrick Burns, and Jeff Hart, and participated in four composition consortiums. The Montco Band is a recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll award and a finalist in the National Prize competition.
The purpose of the Montgomery County Concert Band is to promote and perpetuate the community concert band tradition and repertoire. In so doing, the Montgomery County Concert Band will create a better understanding and appreciation of instrumental music for the general public, as well as will offer an opportunity for individual musical expression and growth among its members.
