The Allegheny Brass Band was founded in 1983. The band has performed under the direction of John Culp (1983-1995), Frank Farina (interim director 1996), Keith Johnston (1996-1999), Paul Gerlach (1999-2012), and currently Stephen Baldanzi.
Honoring the tradition of an authentic British-style brass band the Allegheny Brass Band uses unique instrumentation which includes cornets rather than trumpets, tenor horns rather than French horns, and the addition of English baritones. The music selections often reflect the British tradition but also draw from a wide range of contemporary and classical genres. A typical concert program consists of show tunes, popular songs, symphonic and opera classics, movie hits, oldies, and marches, plus the best new contemporary brass band works.
The Allegheny Brass Band regularly performs all over the Western counties of Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio. Venues include community festivals, local concert series, school band concerts, retirement communities, and special events. Additional highlights of the band’s history include tours abroad to play in Bermuda and China. More recently the band has performed at the ACB 2016 Convention in Pittsburgh. The band has also played at the annual brass band festival in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
