This presentation, Creating Connection – Building Community in the Adult Concert Band, explores the importance of fostering a strong sense of community among adult musicians. Unlike school-based ensembles, adult concert bands rely on voluntary participation, making connection and belonging essential for member retention, motivation, and musical success. The session highlights the emotional, social, and artistic benefits of a community-centered approach, such as improved ensemble cohesion, reduced isolation, and increased commitment. It offers practical strategies for building community, including creating a welcoming environment for new members, organizing social events, encouraging collaborative decision-making, and engaging with the broader community through outreach and performances. The presentation also addresses common challenges like communication gaps and time constraints, offering realistic solutions to overcome them. Ultimately, it emphasizes that every member contributes to the culture of the band and that intentional efforts by leadership can turn a group of individuals into a connected, thriving musical community.
