At the beginning of the month, the troop participated in ConnJam, a jamboree in Connecticut. In a jamboree, scouts from all over the state come to one campground to have fun. There were many activities there, such as Patch trading, Ziplines, and a Climbing wall! Unfortunately, there will not be another ConnJam for the next 3 years. Some cool things that the Troop did were that Nathan wore an inflatable eagle costume named Baldi (not the teacher), a Blackhawk helicopter landed in the middle of the event, and there was a concert and fireworks display to close out the weekend.
For Memorial Day, the Saturday before hand, the Troop put up a total of 100 flags on the town common. We have assisted the Lions Club with posting flags for the past few years to honor veterans for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. After we were done, there was food to quench our hunger.
On the day of Memorial Day, our Troop teamed up with Troop 243 to continue the tradition of walking down Boston Road carrying a huge American flag between us.
This month, Ben Hicks, Connor Moore, Ryan Gleason, Amsden Klinghard, and Sadie Stadinski all achieved their Eagle Scout Rank. This has been the most Eagle Scouts in one group in Troop 131 history, where 5 people chose to honor their eagle rank at the same ceremony. All five of these scouts had to complete more than 20 merit badges each, some of which take months to complete, provide leadership in the Troop for more than 1 year, and plan and execute a huge project to help the community. The Eagle Scout Project includes fundraising, planning, scheduling, and staffing of the project, which is all organized by the Scout that is receiving the award.
This month, the troop took a long journey up to Maine to go on a whitewater rafting trip down Kennebec River. The river consisted of 12 miles of white water rapids ranging from class 1, all the way up to class "5" (4) rapids. The troop had a lot of fun and even got out of the boats to go swimming in the freezing water! After we were all done, we all went back to the building it was being held at, and we ate the very delicious food that was provided to us. After we were done, we went on a hike to Moxie Falls, which was a beautiful waterfall nearby the campsite. the photos for that are in the second slideshow.
On June 14th, (Flag Day), the troop helped the Dudley Gendron retire flags. The reason that we burn the flags is because it is a respectful way of disposing of flags that are no longer fit for service. There were a lot of flags retired during the ceremony, and there was another 48-star flag like last year! Afterwards, there was a lot of pizza and ice cream, which were both delicious.
