F2 Change-Makers: Jessica, Anika, Declan and Jeff
We aim to reduce food waste and to educate others about this issue as well. As it is almost impossible for food companies to avoid food waste, our goal is targeted toward our community.
Food waste not only wastes food, but it wastes money as well. On a more important note, food waste also wastes the resources used and the greenhouse gas emissions emitted to produce it.
It helps the environment by contributing less to global warming and climate change.
Below is some information about how this problem is manifesting in world, and some real-world examples.
The top contributors of food waste are poor planning and industrial production restrictions. Consumers often plan poorly and purchase too much food without realising that if you return any food it get's thrown out by the store. Another huge contributor to food waste is the fact that food safety regualtions leave no room for errors. Therefore, if any error at all is made when producing food the food must be thrown out.
Food waste is a lot more harmful to the environment than you think. Food waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more toxic than carbon dioxide, when it ends up in a landfill. In fact, if global food waste were a country, it would rank third in the world in terms of greenhouse gas emissions!
