Educate the school about batteries and how they negatively affect the environment and encouraging students to recycle batteries in the correct way, whether it is through bringing it directly to the recycling plant or putting it in the proper recycling bin at UTS.
Is to help the environment by making sure that all batteries are properly recycled, this would provide a better environment for us students and make the world more sustainable.
Educating people about why we should recycle non-rechargeable batteries, and the impact of putting batteries in the garbage/landfill, encourage UTS students and staff to recycle their non-rechargeable batteries, and encourage UTS students and staff to use rechargeable batteries
E-Waste and Batteries
Join us in the change-making! Let's work together to support sustainable development in this area.
This event would essentially be a contest about recycling batteries for house points. To put this plan into action, we would have 4 bins labelled with their respective houses, and students who bring in batteries can simply drop them into their house's bin. After a week, we will tally up the number of batteries received and contact the house reps to give out house points based on batteries donated.
We will be emailing the UTS community about the negative effects of not recycling batteries and different alternatives. We hope to enlighten the students and staff and hope they change their perspective on batteries. Hopefully, if they know what happens behind the scenes, people will be more inclined to help our cause.
We will be setting up the Battery Bin to allow students to recycle batteries. We will put up eye-catching posters to help attract people to bring old batteries from home and recycle them into the bin. On the first day, we could also hand out posters to people walking by in order to educate them about the importance of recycling batteries.
Below is some information about how this problem is manifesting in world, and some real-world examples.
This is a bin that was installed by U of T and it gets emptied every week. If you ever have used batteries feel free to recycle them here!
Rechargeable batteries are batteries that can be used multiple times. This reduces waste and provides a better long term investment into a device. Although some rechargeable batteries and the charger costs a lot, it is a worthwhile investment.
When technology or e-waste is heated by the sun, toxic chemicals are released into the air damaging the atmosphere. This is making the temperature of the Earth more unpredictable and melting the ice caps. With more and more technology being made every day, thousands of older model phones (that have batteries inside them), will be thrown out.
