Salvador P. Lopez was the 11th president elected of the University of the Philippines, from 1969 to 1975. In his early life, he himself had studied within UPM, with a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also taught literature and journalism within his alma mater from 1933 to 1936. However, after the war had started, he was soon commissioned as the first lieutenant of General Douglas McArthur’s staff as a copy and scriptwriter. Shortly after the war had ended, he was ordered as chief of the historical section at the Philippine Army headquarters. He then went on to represent the Philippines as ambassador for other countries, most notably being one of the architects for the regional accord of “MaPhiLind” (Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia). During his presidency, student activism had boomed, where students launched mass protests with two of these protests being the “First Quarter Storm” of 1970 and the “Diliman Commune” of 1971.
