Edgardo Javier Angara (1934–2018) was the President of the University of the Philippines from 1981 to 1987 and later became the longest-serving senator in the post-EDSA period. He is a lawyer, educator, banker, and patron of the arts, where his legislative career spanned four consecutive Senate terms. He championed key reforms through landmark laws that strengthened agriculture, education, health, arts and culture, science and technology, governance, financial systems, and social welfare in the Philippines.
