Jose Abueva

Jose V. Abueva (1928 - 2021) served as the 16th President of University of the Philippines from 1987 to 1993, as well as Chancellor of the UP Diliman campus from 1990 to 1991. With a sterling history in both academic and governmental careers, his presidency was marked by the introduction of the Socialized Tuition Fee Assistance Program (STFAP), a bracketing system that strived towards student accessibility through financial assistance. Furthermore, he also implemented a Filipino language policy within UP and was a signatory to the now abrogated UP-DND Accord of 1989, which aimed for UP's autonomy without military intervention.
