“Planning for Technology-Enhanced Teaching” was the continuation of the first in the series last January 30, 2023, by Dr. Erlyn A. Sana entitled: “The Development of Open Educational Resources.” It was also an overview of the succeeding topic on May 29, 2023, “Integrating Technology in the Classroom and Laboratory.” There was a total of 208 zoom participants who attended the online activity. Majority came from the University of the Philippines Manila, Adamson University, Cebu Technological University, University of the East, Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Center, Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, DMMC Institute of Health Sciences, Far Eastern University – Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, and St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Dr. Nemuel S. Fajutagana started with the Why and How perspectives of designing an instruction using technology-enhanced teaching in order to ensure the achievement of intended outcomes. With the onset of Covid-19, transitions in teaching and learning were geared towards blended learning. There was an increased utilization of innovative teaching and assessment methods which require technology particularly flipped classroom, team-based learning, case-based learning and computer-assisted learning.

In preparing to teach using educational technology, two major points were discussed: (1) Planning using TPACK framework and (2) Selecting media using ASSURE model. TPACK means technological, pedagogical and content knowledge. Teachers may be content experts but they need to be equipped with at least the basic pedagogical knowledge and strategies to ensure appropriate delivery of content. To make the pedagogy more effective, technology can be used to further achieve the learning outcomes. The ASSURE model include the following principles: A – Analyze the learners, S – State the Objectives, S – Select media and resources, U – Utilize media and materials, R – Require learner participation, E – Evaluate and revise. Another model for planning technology-enhanced teaching is the Gagne model with 9 general steps of instruction for learning: (1) Gain attention, (2) Describe the goal, (3) Stimulate the recall of prior knowledge, (4) Present the material to be learned, (5) Provide guidance for learning, (6) Elicit performance, (7) Provide informative feedback, (8) Assess performance, and (9) Enhance retention and transfer.

The Q & A towards the end of the session was engaging with queries about a variety of issues, a from what technology-based teaching would students prefer, should students be required to turn on their videos the entire duration of a synchronous session, to students’ motivation to submit their outputs if they will not be graded, and other issues. Dr. Fajutagana emphasized the following points in response to these queries: simple instructional videos can be made interactive with frequent pauses to ask questions, which students should answer; teachers should also design their classes to ensure students’ participation because the instructional events are not about the teachers but the learners; and more than the grades, formative feedback from teachers are more important for students to learn. He further reiterated about the students’ learning context so that they will be motivated by the Why’s to ensure that the How’s are done.

-Written by Niña F. Yanilla, PTRP, LPT, MHPEd

Last March 20, 2023, NTTCHP conducted an HPEd Forum entitled, “Basic Principles of Quantitative Data Analysis with Statistical Applications.” Dr. Margarita M. Gutierrez, our alumna, served as our guest speaker. This is the first time that the college opened the HPEd Forum to the public. Dr. Gutierrez used her own paper as an example on how to use different computer programs when doing quantitative research. Participants found the presentation simple, very timely, and easy to follow. It was well attended by a total of 250 participants with geographical distribution mostly from NCR and other parts of Luzon. There were a number of participants from the Visayas, and a few from other parts of the world, such as Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Gutierrez proposed the use of a 12-step approach to quantitative data analysis. She also mentioned the use of PICOT technique, especially if you intend to use inferential statistics. PICOT stands for P – Population, I – Intervention, C- Comparison or Control, O- Outcomes, and T- Time frame. The collection of data must be consistent with the researcher’s sample and sampling method. She suggested using Google Form for questionnaires to easily translate, download, and clean the data in Google Sheets. Variables can be analyzed in groups or individually, but she advised the participants that analyzing variables together is easier and more accurate.

Dr. Gutierrez also discussed the two branches of quantitative analysis: descriptive and inferential analysis. Descriptive analysis focuses on findings about the sample itself while inferential analysis aims to make predictions about the population, based on the findings within the sample. There is also a need for the researcher to understand the statistical design and the statistical testing process they intend to use to provide a clear approach in making decisions about comparison of groups or variables. Lastly, she recommended that researchers “keep statistical rigor while performing the applicable analyses.”
