List of HPEd Courses

The NTTCHP offers three degree programs: Master in Health Professions Education (MHPEd, Professional Track), Master of Arts in Health Professions Education (MAHPEd, Academic Track), and Doctor of Health Professions Education (DrHPEd)

The list of health professions education courses below are offered by the NTTCHP for undergraduate, master's and doctorate students of NTTCHP and UP Manila.

Undergraduate Course

HPEd 20: Learning for Teaching (3 units)

Basic principles, theories and methodologies of understanding one’s learning and using the process of learning to help others learn.

Note: Currently taken by undergraduate students from the UP Manila Colleges

HP 201 Psycho-Philosophical Foundations of Teaching and Learning in the Health Science s (2)
Principles of philosophy and psychology pertinent to educational situations in the health professions that form the basis for the teaching-learning of the health professional.

HP 211 Curriculum Planning in the Health Professions (2)
Principles and strategies for planning of new curricula and modifying existing ones. Development of a total curricular plan in a specific health area of interest of the participant.

HP 221 Instructional Design in Health Science Courses (2)
Development of a design of a unit of instruction within the participant’s area of teaching with particular consideration of the different available methods of instruction and their appropriateness for specific instructional situations in the health fields.

HP 231 Evaluation in Health Professions Education (2)
Principles, techniques, trends in evaluative practices used in health professional schools with focus on student achievement and effectivity of health professions educational programs.

HP 241 Practicum: Teaching Skills in Health Professions Education (1)
Critical evaluations and development of the component skills of teaching in various instructional situations encountered in health professions education. (Pre or co-requisites: HP 201 & HP 221)

HP 251 Technology-enhanced Teaching and Learning in the Health Sciences (2)
Integration of concepts, principles, and theories in teaching and learning strategies in the health sciences in various instructional settings. Application of best- evidence, interactive, and technology-enhanced teaching-learning strategies to achieve learning outcomes. (Pre or co-requisites: HP 221)

HP 261 Organizing and Management of Health Programs (2)
General principles of organization and management of health programs and health agencies; relationships of participant’s institution to other agencies in the National Health Plan. Operation of participant’s institution, his/her own and other’s role within it. Utilization of these principles in educational change.

HP 271 Test Construction and Analysis in Health Sciences (2)
Principles and methods with skill development in the construction and scoring of paper and pencil, oral and psychomotor tests, including comprehensive examinations, and the analysis of data from such tests, leading to decision-making based on such assessment.

HP 299 Research methods (2)
The scientific method and approaches to research; basic statistical techniques used in analyzing data; and skills in the review of research literature and in writing and evaluating research proposals in health professions education.

Concepts of attitude development and behaviour modification of the health professional and methods/tools to measure attitudes

Integration of theories of curriculum and instructional design and general principles of education in developing community-based training programs

HP 233: Assessment Instruments for Educational Evaluation & Research (2)*
Development and implementation of valid and reliable assessment instruments for evaluation and research in Health Professions Education

HP 234: Teacher Evaluation in Health Professions Education (2 units)
Concepts, research, and development in teacher evaluation in the health professions with emphasis on methods of evaluation and feedback for improvement of instruction

HP 246: Mentoring in Health Professions Education (2 units)
Application of the basic concepts and general principles in teaching and learning that serve as the framework for carrying out effective mentoring in the health professions

HP 247: Independent Study (1 unit)
Individual projects and learning contracts students like to pursue in selected topics

HP 248: Teaching and Assessment with Simulation in the Health Sciences (1 unit)*
Theory and practice in the use of simulation in teaching and assessment of clinical competence

HP 252: Preparation of Instructional Media for Health Sciences Course (1 unit, laboratory)
Principles and techniques in the choice, preparation and presentation of various audio-visual aids and other educational media

HP 262: Administration of Health Professions Education Programs (1 unit)
Application of theories of management to the school/agency of participant in the determination and attainment of its goal

(Prerequisite: HP 261)

HP 263: Selection of Students for the Health Sciences (1 unit)
An overview of intellectual and non-intellectual parameters used for selection of students in the health sciences. In-depth study of these parameters and their adaptation to local needs. The issue of combining the data for measurement of these parameters to make selection decisions will be addressed

HP 264: International Comparative Education in the Health Science (1 unit)*
A critical analysis and comparison of international practices, trends, and issues in health sciences education

HP 292: Science and Art of Research (2 units)
The roles of theories, concepts, and principles in research as science and art

HP 293: Data Analysis in Health Professions Education (2 units)*
Use of basic quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques in educational evaluation and research

Core Courses (DrHPEd)

For the DrHPEd Students:

HPEd 321: Educational Planning (3 units)
Classic and contemporary curriculum designs according to the psycho-philosophical foundations of learning. The corresponding instructional system design (ISD) components will be juxtaposed with the appropriate curriculum framework to develop viable transformative formal and/or informal academic programs in health professions education (HPEd). Interdependence and transformative learning will be emphasized in the educational planning.

HPEd 331: Educational Evaluation and Quality Assurance (3 units)
Classic and contemporary theories on educational evaluation with applicable frameworks. Focus will be on the continuum of evaluation from needs assessment and diagnostic phase, to monitoring (formative), impact (summative), certification, and accreditation within total quality management (TQM). Interdependence and transformative learning will be emphasized in all phases of educational evaluation

HPEd 341: Information and Communication Technology in HPEd (2 units)
The HPEd 341 offers knowledge on principles of information communication technology (ICT) and their applications to the educational, organizational, and research dimensions of HPEd.

HPEd 361: Educational Leadership and Management (3 units)
Classic and contemporary theories on educational leadership and management, policy development, and social change, integrated within applicable health professions education settings. Training hospitals, community health facilities, and similar organizations will also be studied in the context of administering a program in health professions education. Inter professional and multidisciplinary collaborations within a unified system will be emphasized. Focus will include local, national, and global systems and organizations.

HPEd 391: Quantitative Data Analysis (2 units)
Basic and advanced statistical tests applied to common types of quantitative data applied in health professions education studies. Topics include descriptive statistics, estimation, tests for means and proportions, non- parametric methods, regression, analysis of variance, common multivariate analysis and meta-analysis.

HPEd 392: Qualitative Data Analysis (2 units)
Classic and contemporary qualitative research designs applied to health professions education. Selection of appropriate research design and collection of sample qualitative data to be subjected to a series of rigorous data analysis.

HPEd 399: Research Methods (3 units)
Application of the scientific method including mixed methods in investigating health professions education. Enhancement sessions on the formulation of research questions/objectives/hypotheses, review of literature, development of theoretical and conceptual frameworks, designing studies, development of data collection procedures, planning for data analysis and identifying study limitations including biases and confounding variables on of the scientific method in investigating health professions education (HPEd).
