BA 3993 Directed Study

BA 3993 is a registration option for students interested in earning credits for business-related independent research projects that contribute to their academic development. Please note that BA 3993 credit is not granted retroactively for previously completed work; approval must be received in advance of beginning the research or directed study project!

Process

  1. Identify a Carlson School of Management faculty member who is willing to sponsor you. In general, the instructor should be a full time faculty member. Students should prepare a tentative project proposal before approaching potential instructors. To be approved for academic credit, the experience must integrate both practical & theoretical knowledge, such that the student not only receives training regarding “what” to do in specific situations, but also gains understanding and knowledge regarding “why” and “how” such activities are undertaken.

  2. Complete the "Directed Activities" form to formally send your Directed Study proposal to the faculty member for approval.

  3. If approved by the faculty member and Department Chair, you will be given online approval to register for BA 3993 during your scheduled registration time, or later, if the approval comes after your scheduled time.

  4. At the end of the term, the instructor is responsible for submitting your BA 3993 grade.

Using BA 3993 in Your BSB Degree Program

Directed Study credits may count as elective credit toward the degree or toward a specific program requirement. Please be clear in your proposal how you wish to apply the credits. Additional approval may be required if the project is to be accepted in lieu of a major course.
