The One-Time Only (OTO) late drop is a special type of drop, permitted only once during an undergraduate degree, and can be used near the end of a course if certain conditions are met.
For full semester courses, the general timeline remains the same. Within the first two weeks of the semester, students are permitted to drop a course on their own, without college approval needed, and no ‘W’ (Withdrawal) will be recorded on their student record. Between weeks 3 through 10, a student can drop a course on their own, without college approval needed, and a ‘W’ WILL be recorded on the student's record. After week 10, students cannot drop a course on their own. In this time frame, students may consider using the One-Time Only (OTO) late drop.
For 7-week session courses (commonly referred to as A-term and B-term courses), the general timeline remains the same. Within the first two weeks of the 7-week session, students are permitted to drop a course on their own, without college approval needed, and no ‘W’ (Withdrawal) will be recorded on their student record. Between weeks 3 through 4, a student can drop a course on their own, without college approval needed, and a ‘W’ WILL be recorded on the student's record. After week 4 of the 7-week session, students cannot drop a course on their own. In this time frame, students may consider using the One-Time Only (OTO) late drop.
The OTO late drop allows a student to drop one course after the deadline passes to drop a course without college permission. A student can do this only once during their undergraduate career.
Students can use the OTO late drop after the deadline passes to drop a course without college permission.
In addition, students must ALSO request to use their OTO late drop before or on the final day of instruction for a course, or before the final assessment for the course, whichever comes first. (Please note that the final assessment for a course could be a final exam, final presentation, final project, or final assignment. Speak with your instructor directly if you need additional clarification on this requirement for a certain course).
Complete the OTO Late Withdrawal Request digital form.
If a student drops a course during the semester (after the preliminary deadline to drop without a ‘W’ has passed), but before the period of time where an OTO late drop can be used, the student will receive a ‘W’ for Withdrawal. If a student uses an OTO late drop, a ‘W’ for Withdrawal will also be recorded on their transcript for the dropped class.
In general, having a ‘W’ on your transcript is not a concern for most employers or graduate schools. However, this can vary by company or by admissions process for individual schools. If you have questions about your own circumstances, please reach out to your academic advisor or career coach to think through if a ‘W’ makes sense for you.
No, but there may be an alternative option depending on a student’s personal scenario. If a student would like to drop a class after the deadline to drop for a ‘W’ has passed, and their OTO late drop was already used in a previous semester, the student would have to petition the Carlson School’s Scholastic Committee. If you find yourself in this situation, reach out to your academic advisor to explore your options.
Yes, there can be. International students should contact International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and their academic advisor to make sure any schedule changes they make do not breach the rules for VISA eligibility or initiate Reduced Course Load protocol. Information about Reduced Course Loads are available on the ISSS website for both F-1 and J-1 visa holders.
It depends. There are additional considerations that come into play for a student abroad. A student in this situation should check with their Carlson Global Institute or Learning Abroad Center contact (here at the University of Minnesota) to (1) see if the OTO late drop is permitted in their course or program and to (2) maintain full-time enrollment in coursework abroad as required by the partnering program. More information about the OTO late drop for students abroad is available on the Learning Abroad Center’s website.
