Effective Fall 2025, the Accounting Department is revising its major through the following undergraduate course updates:
ACCT 5102 (4 Cr.) will become two, 2-credit required courses: ACCT 5111 - Intermediate Accounting II (2 Cr.) and ACCT 5112 - Intermediate Accounting III (2 Cr.)
ACCT 5135 (4 Cr.) will become two, 2-credit courses: ACCT 5151 Fundamentals of Federal Income Tax (2 Cr.) and ACCT 5235 Federal Taxation of Individuals (2 Cr.)
In the new version of the Accounting major, effective Fall 2025, only ACCT 5151 will be required, and ACCT 5235 will be an elective option.
With this revision, the total number of credits to complete the Accounting major will decrease from the current total of 26 credits, to 24 total credits in the new version of the major. The credit changes will not impact eligibility for the CPA exam. However, students planning to pursue the CPA are strongly encouraged to consider ACCT 5235 as an elective to help prepare for the tax portion of the CPA exam.
Students who declare the Accounting major moving forward will automatically follow the new major requirements. Current Accounting majors (i.e. students who declared the major prior to March 1, 2025) will follow the old/current requirements, but have the opportunity to opt into the new requirements should they prefer.
To opt into the new version of the major, please fill out this form. The Carlson Undergraduate Program will update your APAS within 7 business days of receiving your submission. Please feel free to contact advisbsb@umn.edu or your academic advisor with any questions
