Interview portion of project /100 pts.
Students will record two 5-7 min. informational interviews several weeks prior to project due date. Interviews will be conducted during class time with an assigned partner from the class. Both interviews will be used during class time for Performance Evaluation Interview classwork. Although students will need to record two videos for class time review, only one video will need to be submitted for the project. Students may choose which video they want to transcribe and submit for the project.
Interview Rubric
Interviews are to be informational interviews that are non-scheduled in terms of structure (i.e., questions should flow from responses). Students familiarize themselves with their introductions and closings and not read them. white round thing 3 interview. Students should familiarize themselves with the rubric below so that they understand what constitutes a good interview:
Relationship (20 pts)
A good interviewer forms a good relationship with their interviewee. They are sensitive to the cultural and power influences on the interview and are mindful to avoid assumptive thinking. The interviewer:
builds rapport through warmth and engagement (3pts)
demonstrates interest in the interviewee. (3pts)
maintains rapport throughout the interview (2pts0
avoids assuming information about the interviewee and instead allows for the interviewee to describe or paint the picture so to speak (3 pts)
demonstrates sensitivity to cultural differences in language, communication, and values (3 pts)
equalizes power within the interview to enhance motivation to share (3 pts)
keeps a professional frame (avoiding silliness, joking, being too informal) (3 pts)
Communication 60 pts
Spoken Communication 20 pts
A good interviewer demonstrates good communication through speech utilized. The interviewer:
speaks at a slow enough pace to be understood and not have the interviewee feel rushed (4 pts)
avoids slang and jargon (3 pts)
is mindful of other language problems (3 pts)
avoids jumbled speech (3 pts)
avoids overuse of filler words (ums, etc.) (4 pts)
pauses and thinks before speaking to word questions (3pts)
Communication: Listening (20 pts)
A good interviewer demonstrates good communication through their listening skills. The interviewer:
utilizes good non-verbal listening behaviors (3 pts)
demonstrates listening through use of verbal listening responses (minimal encouragers, restatements, etc) (5pts)
avoids negative attending behaviors and interruption of the interviewee (3 pts)
demonstrates through questions and responses that they are remembering and following the content of the interview. (5 pts)
allows ample space or silence to allow interviewee to finish thoughts before rushing in with a response. (4 pts)
Communication: Questioning Skills 20 pts
A good interviewer demonstrates good communication through their questioning skills. The interviewer
utilizes open questions toward the start the interview (4pts)
utilizes probes as necessary for clarification and to obtain further information (4pts)
avoids interruptive early probing unless confused (4pts)
avoids an over-reliance on questions and a “ping pong” question/answer/question/answer format. (4 pts)
avoids question pitfalls or is judicial in their use (4 pts)
Structuring of the Interview 20 pts
A good interviewer provides appropriate structure for the interviewee
orients the interviewee (provides context, purpose, time frame for interview) (3 pts)
provides smooth transitions through use of restatements, identifiable progression of topic or through other means so as to create an interview that flows and is not choppy (3 pts)
provides a non-scheduled structure that allows for questions to come from the interviewees responses rather than rely on predetermined questions (3 pts)
keeps the focus of the interview and does not stray off topic and purpose. (3 pts)
transitions smoothly into closing with a summary or clearing house question (2pts)
utilizes a few techniques to signal the closing so it does not appear abrupt (3 pts)
adheres to the time frame and paces the interview well. (3 pts)
