Course Overview:
Introduction to the interview as an information-gathering tool in research, the clinic, & industry. Students receive supervised experience in interviewing. Types of interviews covered include: informational interviews; performance interviews, recruitment interviews, survey interviews and counseling interviews.
Course Learning Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the four main features of an interview: relationship, communication, structure and purpose (Class 2)
2. Students will be able to define characteristics of a good interviewer-interviewee relationship (Class 3, 4)
3. Students will be able to develop a good relationship with their interviewee informed by awareness of their own biases, inclusivity, empathy, and motivational factors. (Class 3, 4, 5)
4. Students will be able to define and differentiate factors that improve communication and those that deter from effective communication (Class 6)
5. Students will develop and apply effective communication skills (speaking, listening, and questioning) (Class 6-10)
6. Students will be able to define and differentiate the structural components of an interview (Class 11, 12)
7. Students will be able to demonstrate use of good structural features within the context of an interview (Class 11, 12)
8. Students will be able to define and differentiate the types of interviews reviewed in the course. (Classes 13-27)
9. Students will be able to differentiate the ways in which the relationship, communication, and structure of the interview varies depending on the purpose of the interview. (Classes 13-27)
