Many leases begin September 1st, but it does not hurt to look sooner.
International Students who are attending Graduate Prep Program (GPP) from August 18 - September 11 can choose the on-campus housing option. The Mathematics Department will cover the cost of on-campus housing for students that are required to attend. During GPP time is a great period to house-search since you can see rentals in person over time.

The UCSC Community post and search for housing using the UCSC Community Housing Email List. Use your @ucsc.edu email to complete the form.
The MathGrads email list often has emails sent about open rooms available for rent. This is a frequent way that folks find housing with fellow graduate students near campus. Please reach out to the the Graduate Advisor if you are not receiving MathGrads emails.
Some may choose to also look on Facebook and Craigslist. Beware of scams!
Your UCSC Offer Letter should be sufficient as proof of income if you were offered funding for your program. If you need additional documentation, the graduate advisor can write a letter on behalf of the Math Department confirming your incoming student status and verification of employment, including salary amounts.
