Graduate Student Mentorship Needs Checklist
By identifying your mentorship needs, you can approach faculty with a clear sense of your expectations for them as your mentor. This checklist can also support you in figuring out if any particular forms of support you are seeking can be met by cultivating a larger network of mentors, from within or outside of your field. While reading, reflect on your own experience and identify any areas where you may feel additionally support could be needed. Feel free to touch base with the graduate advisor if you need help identifying next steps to fill any gaps.
This template provides a list of things that might be considered when working together with a faculty advisor. It might be used as a reference to inform a conversation with your faculty advisor about collaborations, or as a template to create your own agreement. It is important to have a mutual understanding and shared expectation when it comes to communicating, working together, and collaborating.
Sample Individual Development Plan
Using an Individual Development Plan (IDP) can help you reflect on your current strengths, clarify your academic and career goals, and create a practical roadmap to achieve them. With guidance from a mentor, the IDP encourages you to explore your motivations, identify key skills to develop, and break down goals into manageable steps. It also provides space to track your progress and adjust your plans over time. Whether you’re just starting or continuing in your academic journey, this tool helps you stay focused, build confidence, and take ownership of your personal and professional growth.
Ensure you are enrolled in the current quarter for the number of units required to meet your status (full or part time). Support can not be posted to your account unless you are enrolled. If you are enrolled, your support may not have been entered or processed correctly. Email the advisor for them to check the status.
