Hosted by Sherry and Elyas
Hi all,
This quarter, we will be organizing a reading group on representations of GL2. This reading group aims to cover Chapter 1 of Automorphic Forms on GL(2) by Langlands and Jacquet. We will explore a series of representations of GL(2) over local fields, starting with Weil representations.
The participants will be expected to have a solid background in graduate real analysis, measure theory, complex analysis, and experience equivalent to a year-long graduate algebra sequence.
We hope to have a meeting that is 1.5 hour long per week, structured by presentation followed by Q & A time. If you are interested, please reply to this email no later than September 23rd at 5 pm.
As of now, this reading group is not associated with any independent study units.
Best,
Sherry & Elyas

The tea committee is coming back, but this year with a different format. I will send a call for sign-ups on a quarterly basis, and you will be signing up for a specific day or days of the week.
Description:
Set up and clean up tea and snacks for scheduled talks.
No shopping - the department shops for supplies.
Give input - what should the department shop for for your tea offerings?
Receive a small service fellowship for helping.
Talk schedule:
Monday: Graduate Colloquium
Tuesday: Undergraduate Colloquium
Wednesday: Geometry & Analysis Seminar
Thursday: Mathematics Colloquium
Friday: Algebra & Number Theory Seminar
Email mathgradadvising@ucsc.edu indicating which day of the week you'd like to volunteer. Most talks start at 4pm, so tea should be set out beforehand. If more than one person volunteers for a given day, you might switch off or coordinate amongst yourselves. You will also be connected with the talk organizers to ensure you're up to date on talks or talk cancellations.

Geometry - 9/18/2025
Algebra - 9/22/2025
The exams are from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm and will be held in McHenry 4130. Snacks and refreshments will be provided, and you are welcome to bring your own food to the exam. More information will be provided to those who register one week before the exam date.

I noticed that one graduate student recently shared a useful resource with the department via email. I thought that that was fantastic, but a shame if folks forget this exists after some time passes and the email is buried in their inbox. My thought was to create a location where such resources can live and be accessible in the future.
I've created this Google Drive Folder for preliminary examination resources that graduate students in the MathGrads-Group can view and add to. This folder is meant to host student created resources so they may be readily accessible and available to future students. Contents in this folder will not be reviewed nor distributed by the Mathematics Department faculty or staff except for purposes related to UCSC Policy and abusive conduct.

A Piazza Forum has been created for the preliminary examinations. I encourage you to ask questions when you're struggling to understand a concept—you can even do so anonymously. I doubly encourage you to answer questions or participate in discussions to help develop the resource. Contents in the forum will not be reviewed nor distributed by the Mathematics Department faculty or staff except for purposes related to UCSC Policy and abusive conduct. If you have folder requests, ask the graduate advisor to have them added.
Join the Piazza Forum using this sign-up link: https://piazza.com/ucsc/other/math200210
The Access Code is the Room # of our colloquium room.
Both of these new resources are brand new and may have some clunks, please let me know if there's anything I can do to help them run smoothly. I encourage you all to use both of these resources as you see fit, however they might be most supportive. Let me know if I can change anything to suit your needs or if you have any questions.
