Some students may be funded by their faculty advisor over the summer in the form of a Summer GSR appointment or by fellowship. These appointments and funds are not guaranteed by the department and are assigned at the discretion of the faculty. Over the summer, students may not hold academic student employment in any combination of titles above 100%. For this reason, if you have also applied for Summer GSI positions or Summer TA positions, it is important to report your Summer GSR position to the Graduate Advisor.
If your faculty advisor intends to pay you a fellowship over the summer, please be aware that the fiscal year closes at the end of June, and payments need to be out well before then. Fellowships paid to graduate students need to be process through the Graduate Division by the graduate advisor. Have your faculty advisor touch base with the graduate advisor to set up their funds to be paid as fellowships BEFORE July 1st. If the funds are not set up as a new item type in AIS, it could take a few weeks to have that processed and the funds may not disburse before the end of the fiscal year.
Graduate Student Instructors (GSI's) are hired to teach courses during Summer Session. The call for Summer GSI's is sent towards the end of Fall Quarter via a Google Form to the MathGrads email list from the Graduate Advisor. Instructions to apply, courses available, and other information will be provided along with the Summer GSI Call.
Once a student is selected for hire, they will receive an unofficial offer from the Mathematics Department indicating what course they were assigned to teach. The unofficial offer is meant to confirm that the Mathematics Department has full intention of hiring, but that they are subject to review and must be approved for the position by the Academic Senate. Only upon Senate approval can the Official Offer be sent.
Once approved, the Summer Session Office will reach out to touch base on scheduling and onboarding.
Summer Teaching Assistant positions are available to teach the MATH courses during Summer Session. The call for Summer TA's is sent towards the beginning of Spring Quarter via a Google Form to the MathGrads email list from the Graduate Advisor. You will be notified of your session assignment a couple weeks before the start of the Summer Session. Your course assignment will be assigned as soon as possible before the start of your assigned session.
For summer appointments, the graduate advisor submits a list of hires to the Summer Session Office. The Summer Session Office then verifies eligibility to work and coordinates with Undergraduate HR to send individuals their offer letters and complete onboarding requirements.
