The three most common types of appointments for graduate students are Teaching Assistants, Graduate Student Researchers, and Graduate Student Instructors. Each of these has a dedicated page on this site which provides information about the application process, timeline, and duties.
The information on this page will apply to all types of Academic Student Employment inside and outside of the Mathematics Department. Questions about employment can be directed to the graduate advisor.
TA positions during the academic year in MATH do not have an application process, but most other appointment types do. Calls for applications for available positions will be sent to the MathGrads email list with instructions to apply. Questions about any positions should be directed to the hiring unit. Be sure to be subscribed to the TA Jobs Google Group in order to receive notifications of available TA positions outside of Math.
Some positions or hiring units may ask to you to confirm availability and interest in an appointment before moving forward with an official offer. Some titles require multiple rounds of review by different campus units before they can determine eligibility, or offers must be accepted by an upcoming deadline. TA positions during the academic year in MATH do not have an unofficial offer.
All Academic Student Employment positions should be paired with an official offer letter indicating the employment dates, hours of work per week, pay rates, and appointment description. This is usually sent via email. Depending on the hiring unit and type of position, the official offer may sent be as pdf letter or presented within an online portal you need to log into. Appointment offers within the Mathematics department are sent via a system called InfoReady about a month before the start of the quarter.
Official offers need to be accepted in order for the hiring unit to move forward with onboarding, including pay and tuition remission. You should not begin working until you have accepted an official offer.
Appointment onboarding is completed by the unit hiring you are being employed by. First time hires within Math will be contacted by Andrew Melford (amelford@ucsc.edu), our the Science Academic Personnel Specialist, to fill out new hire paperwork.
Graduate students holding an academic student employment position have tuition and fees waived for the quarter of their appointment. This needs to be entered by the home department, so if you're being employed outside of the Mathematics Department, the graduate advisor needs to be notified in order to have tuition remission posted to your account. Please note that tuition and fee remission does not include Non-Resident Student Tuition.
The tuition and fee remission is posted to student accounts on the date indicated in the Academic Calendar for financial aid disbursement. Please be aware that enrollment is required for aid to be disbursed. If you see that your tuition and fee remission is not being posted, double check the following:
You are enrolled in sufficient units for the current quarter (12 units for full time graduate students).
You have accepted your appointment's official offer.
You do not have any holds on your account due to outstanding payments or other items.
You notified the graduate advisor of your appointment if you are employed outside of math.
If all of these are in place, reach out mathgradadvising@ucsc.edu for support.
All graduate students are automatically assessed a quarterly fee for mandatory the Graduate Student Health Insurance Program (GSHIP) unless the student has opted out of the program with the Cowell Health Center. Students obtain waivers by demonstrating to Cowell Health Center that they have comparable coverage under another health insurance policy.
Academic Student Employees (TA's, GSI's, GSR's) who have appointments of 50% time or greater will have the fee covered for them either by UCSC or by their hiring professor the quarter of their appointment.
GSHIP provides year-round and worldwide coverage. More information regarding GSHIP can be found on the Student Health Center website.
