The Mathematics Department is dedicated to supporting students experiencing Academic Difficulty. When it is identified that a student is falling behind on milestones, or is finding difficulty in courses, the Graduate Advisor and Graduate Vice Chair may step in to discuss challenges and offer support.
Student experiencing Academic Difficulty will be prompted to follow an Academic Support Plan that outlines milestones needing to be met and a plan to achieve them. The support plan will be sent to the student and their faculty advisor, if applicable, to review and sign.
Preliminary Examinations and core course requirements should be completed by the end of the 2nd year. After the spring exams, if a student is having difficulty passing at a sufficient level, or has not taken the exam, they will be considered to be experiencing Academic Difficulty.
A student experiencing Academic Difficulty with the preliminary exams should touch base with the Graduate Advisor and Graduate Vice Chair to discuss ways to prepare. It is also highly recommended that students discuss with the exam writers for the preliminary examination they took and did not pass to determine what could be improved.
The oral exam should be completed by the Spring quarter of the 3rd year. If a student does not take the exam by then, or a student takes the exam and does not pass, they will be considered to be experiencing Academic Difficulty.
A student experiencing academic difficulty with the oral exam will discuss with the Graduate Vice Chair and their faculty advisor on actionable items that will support them in succeeding leading up to the second attempt of the oral exam. The oral exam can be taken at most twice per Graduate Division Policy, so it is important to be well prepared before retaking the exam.
Academic Notice is a formal designation and process to help students meet their degree objectives and complete their degree requirements within normative time. Academic Notice may be recommended when a student has been identified as experiencing academic difficulty and does not make satisfactory progress when implementing the Academic Support Plan.
