Graduate students may be employed either as a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) or Teaching Assistant. Department Staff are responsible for the hiring of Grad Students as Teaching Assistants. Faculty/PIs are responsible for hiring a Grad Student as a GSR.
Our Department pays at a Salary Point "5".
Academic Quarter at 50% - $3,883/month or $11,648/quarter
Summer at 100% - $7,766/month or $23,298/3 months
If a student is supported at 50% for all three quarters plus 100% in the summer - their annual salary is $58,245
In addition to salary costs, payroll taxes and benefits (PBR) need to be figured into the total cost. The current Composite Benefit Rate (CBR) for any wages not paid with 19900 funds is 4.8%. If on a "Federal Contract" - the CBR is 1.7%
Annual Salary = $58,236
Plus 4.8% for PBR = $2,795
Total costs = $61,031 (plus tuition and fees, GSHIP)
GSHIP = Graduate Student Health Insurance
Graduate students are limited to 50% employment during the academic quarter unless the Graduate Division approves an exception. This exception does not apply to international students.
Duties performed by a GSR shall be directly related to a research objective. Hiring a GSR to perform duties suited for a student assistant or staff position is not permissible.
IDRF The International Doctoral Recruitment Fellowship (IDRF) is available for international students by request only when an applicant is being recommended for admission before their admission letter is sent. The IDRF pays NRST in full for their second and third years provided they remain in good standing (academic and conduct).
NRST/NRT Once a student ATCs they will receive the NRST/NRT waiver for three (3) consecutive calendar years. It's important to note that this waiver is not 9 quarters but three calendar years. This means that if a student goes on leave the waiver is not extended to accommodate:
Our Division (PBSci) hires Graduate Student Researchers on a quarterly basis. The Department sends the hiring request call to faculty eight weeks before the start of each quarter. Faculty/PI must submit the GSR Hiring form in a timely manner to initiate the hiring process. The deadline is important as the per the GSR contract, GSR must receive their appointment letters no later than 30 days prior to their start date.
