This rotation is based in a variety of ambulatory clinics in and around Edmonton. The primary focus is out-patient ambulatory care and pediatric consults to facilitate knowledge, skills and experiences essential to transition to practice
The rotation is of variable length to accommodate flexibility. Learning experiences may also include research, organized educational sessions with UME or other pre-approved activities. Ask your Program Directors if this is of interest to you
At the end of this rotation, residents will have developed a framework to evaluate ambulatory pediatric patients, compose a plan of therapy and propose continuing care of these patients. They have the opportunity to participate in an office-based team approach to evaluation and management of issues, promoting health awareness, and providing anticipatory guidance.
Residents will perform thorough evaluations of patients, create a problem list, and make the appropriate referrals to community supports and other medical consultants as necessary, depending on the clinical learning experiences selected
The resident is responsible for scheduling a minimum of 3.5 days (7 half days) of clinic per a 5 day week, arranging these with each clinic according to the specific clinical contacts provided
The presence of the resident should not interfere with the educational opportunity of other learners on that rotation.
The resident must enter their scheduled clinics into the R4 Clinic Rotation google calendar (see below for details).
The resident will have a narrative comment completed for each clinic attended on cbme.med.ualberta.ca. If attending a clinic longitudinally for a week, a CanMEDS Longitudinal Assessment Form can be completed in lieu of these narratives, for traditional (non-CBD) trainees.
The resident will discuss with their preceptor their learning objectives for that day in clinic
The preceptor will provide feedback based on clinical opportunities and observations each clinic day
Professionalism in the booking of clinics, notifying the appropriate individuals of any unexpected cancellations or changes in the clinic schedule and complying with the objectives of the index clinic
Each post call weekdays (other than Wednesday) would reduce the number of clinic days by 1 (2 hald days) per week. Post-call Wednesdays would reduce the number of clinic days expected by 0.5 (1 half day). Examples below:
Away 1 day a week you would do 5 half days clinics
Away 2 days a week you would do 3 half days of clinics
Away 3 or 4 days a week you would do 2 half days of clinics
**If an R4 covers CTU Purple or Orange, this would count towards the following:
1 day CTU = 2 days Clinics
1 week CTU = 2 weeks Clinics
YOUR NAME - Clinic with NAME OF PRECEPTOR
Enter the clinic date and start and end time of the clinic.
Feel free to invite yourself to the booking, if you would like the info in your personal schedules then you are not entering it twice.

As part of your R4 year, we ask that you schedule your own community rotation blocks within Edmonton if this is a part of your track schedule so it can best address your learning goals for your transition to practice. Once you have scheduled this, please email genpeds@ualberta.ca who you plan to rotate with. If you are in need of some ideas, please reach out and we can connect you with some community preceptors.
