FoMD Professionalism and Racism Reporting Process
In addition to a Professionalism Button, FoMD also has a racism reporting structure with a Racism Button where learners can report instances of racism, including microaggressions. As part of making our program as safe and inclusive as possible, we want to ensure residents know where to report experiences of exclusion and discrimination. You can also contact Dr. Penny Smyth (smyth@ualberta.ca) from the Professionalism Office if you do not feel comfortable using the online buttons.
The Stollery CISM Peer Support Team is a collective of trained multidisciplinary peers who respond to help fellow employees and team members manage workplace distress. This team assists individuals to focus on resilience and recovery on their home units; addressing the effect of the event, not the event itself.
What makes a particular incident stressful varies and may involve multiple factors. It may be one event or a series of events that leads to increased workplace stress for a team or individual. The CISM Peer Support Team member’s first job is to check-in with their peers regularly, and then confidentially listen and assess the needs of each situation. Then, they work with their CISM Peer Support Team colleagues and the individual to create a 1:1 or group support strategy.
You can reach out to unit managers while on rotation or specific staff members Drs. Gurpreet Khaira (gurpreetkhaira8@gmail.com) or Chloe Joynt (cjoynt@ualberta.ca), who are CISM trained professionals and available within 72 hours of reaching out. We also have a CISM peer-support trained resident, Amélie Lachance-Soulard who can be reached any time by text or email (lachanc1@ualberta.ca).

Core 12 leading inpatient team or Core 14a (teaching) or Core 14b (feedback) are great EPAs for Junior Residents to complete or attach narratives to providing written feedback for Senior Residents. Senior Residents can also send this to their students and junior trainees for completion.
As a reminder this should reflect feedback conversations that have occurred. This can also be used in teaching dossiers and education portfolios as prompts for reflection.
Please reach out to the program if you have further questions.
Just a quick reminder that all R2's who have done 2 weeks of Green and 2 weeks of triage are eligible to complete their 3 buddy shifts. These shifts need to be completed prior to entering our R3 year in order to accomindate call coverage. As a point of clarification, swapping junior and senior roles is only allowed for the third buddy shift (where on a scheduled call shift, you and the scheduled senior can decide to switch roles in order to complete your third and final buddy shift). Prior to this, please ensure you complete you buddy shifts as the 4th resident on call (ie: 2 scheduled juniors, 1 scheduled senior and 1 buddy).
Please join us for a virtual department research meeting on Monday, October 6, 2025 from 12-1PM!
The Pediatrics Research Forum is a quarterly event open to all department faculty members, staff and learners. Attend to ask questions, connect with your colleagues, and learn about research-related activities, ongoing and planned.
On October 6, we will have a presentation from the Research Partner Network on an overview and usage of the Researcher Home Page. The Researcher Home Page is an online grant management tool that allows researchers to submit requests for new research projects and amendments, track project spending and commitments, and run financial reports, among other things. This session should be especially valuable for new researchers, junior faculty members, and anyone unfamiliar with the Researcher Home Page.

For R2-R4s - NICU cross shifts at RAH/GNH. Choose a shift w/o learners from Block 3, and email Abid Rizvi AND Melissa for the GNH or just Melissa Meaver for the RAH.
Complete this Google Doc after each NICU Cross Cover Shift. Melissa facilitates call stipends - shifts must be confirmed with her.
We are very happy to see how well-utilized the trainee touchdown areas have become—it’s great!
A few friendly reminders below that will help keep our shared spaces tidy, professional, and respectful for everyone.
Protect sensitive information – Please do not walk away from a workstation with patient or other sensitive information visible on the screen. It only takes a second to minimize the screen or lock the computer if you need to step away.
Proper waste disposal – The garbage receptacles at each station are small, so please take larger items to the kitchenettes for disposal. Do not put garbage in the blue recycling bins.
Recycling guidelines – The blue recycling bins at each station are for paper recycling only. Please avoid placing beverage containers—especially those with dairy products—in these bins.
Reminder that when you are missing time from a rotation, whether a full day or not, please email the following people so all are aware and can support you with the time away while also ensuring appropriate staffing:
PDs AND PAs (Jess, Anna and the genpeds@ualberta.ca email)
The rotation administrator
The rotation education coordinator (e.g. Dr. Krystina Ediger, kediger@ualberta.ca, on NICU)
Your staff/the team you are working with for the day
The Peds Leads
NICU Absences Process Reminders: Please review the NICU absence policies as outlined below to ensure proper procedures are followed when away on a relevant NICU rotation:
MIS and GNH sites: if for any reason you are unable to attend work it is your responsibility to notify: your preceptor/clinical team, the NPM Rotation Coordinator, Dr. Sylvie Cormier (sylvie2@ualberta.ca), GenPeds Administrators (genpeds@ualberta.ca), Abid Rizvi and Melissa Meaver know that you will be absent.
RAH and UAH sites: if for any reason you are unable to attend work it is your responsibility to notify: your preceptor/clinical team, the NPM Rotation Coordinator, Dr. Sylvie Cormier (sylvie2@ualberta.ca), GenPeds Administrators (genpeds@ualberta.ca), and Melissa Meaver know that you will be absent.
Viral Symptom Policy: Wondering when you should not attend work (/activate back-up?) check the AHS policy here!
Back up Call Reminder: Back-up is for sudden illness < 48h, if you are sick and going to miss a shift >48h you must find a trade.
Dr. Martin Gauthier is looking for a senior resident with an interest in mental health, health advocacy, patient education or knowledge translation to help with creating mental health information package(s) and website(s) targeted to families on eating disorders, personality disorders, cannabis use, self harm, gender identity/dysphoria and learning disabilities (also open to other ideas). If interested please contact Dr. Gauthier at martin.gauthier@gmail.com for more information!
Are you interested in doing more research during your pediatric residency? and/or a career as a clinical scientist? If so consider applying to the TRIP program (Trainee Researcher in Pediatrics)
Just a reminder from Dr. Forbes: "Whenever possible, we ask that you try to complete the EPAs in the moment, or at the latest at the end of the day with the learners, so that the feedback is timely. We are seeing that EPAs that are saved often "expire" before they are completed by the preceptor, and some students are having difficulty obtaining the required number, as well as are missing out on receiving the associated feedback." Here's a little EPA video for your enjoyment.
At the end of each block the Leads tally all of the call shifts worked through the month on the CTU call schedule (both Peds residents and off service residents) and submit these to PARA. Call stipends are paid out once a month as per the attached schedule (eg: Block 1 call stipends will be paid August 24th). We also submit the call stipends for residents who cover call while on electives or away on rural community rotations. At the end of each block we send an email to those residents who are on electives or rural community rotations with a calendar to fill out your shifts!
If you have any questions or concerns, give the leads a shout!
As we continue to look at how CBME changes our processes, and look to foster a culture of mutual support and growth, we have been talking to the PDs about how we can facilitate feedback and documentation of feedback between seniors and juniors (in BOTH directions). The narrative forms on CBME are a great space to capture this feedback. Whether it's a quick one sentence "great job managing a very acute ward tonight!" or suggestions on areas for improvement, we would encourage you to look at your processes on call and find opportunities to use these forms. (Possibly triggering the form at the start of the shift and then taking two quick minutes at the end of a shift to talk about it together). We are excited to continue learning and growing with you all!
We had a meaningful discussion at RPC about evaluations and wanted to share a couple of points with the resident body:
For CBD learners on CTU rotations: it is recommended that a CanMEDS Longitudinal Assessment (CLA) form be sent to your staff at the end of each week (in addition to other EPAs). The narrative comments are immensely helpful in evaluating our growth as we progress in the rotation.
Faculty evaluations by residents: Along the theme of providing feedback, a gentle reminder that any comments we place in AHD evaluations or preceptor evaluations go directly to that preceptor in addition to being unfiltered into teaching dossiers that are used for faculty evaluation/promotion. Jess’ statement, “words matter,” resonated with the group. We discussed taking a moment to read the feedback provided and reflect on whether it reflects a growth mindset and the culture we support in our program.
EPAs: The intention of EPAs is for growth over time with constructive and timely feedback, so receiving a "2 or 3" should still prompt constructive feedback with a growth mindset. Residents are encouraged to trigger EPAs both on things that go well and on areas for growth. Discussions on how to best facilitate this while ensuring adequate learning opportunities for progression are occuring at the staff level.
We have had some programs identify that sometimes EPAs are being submitted which contain too much detail in the "Context Information" text box. These EPAs have identifying patient information and therefore pose concerns regarding safety of patient health information. Ensure that there is not detailed or potentially identifying patient information included in submitted EPAs. Residents should not enter identifying patient information, and if faculty note too much detail in EPAs reviewed by them, they should de-identify it. The included context information should only be enough to remind the resident and faculty of the encounter.
Additionally, please take 3 minutes to read this powerful piece by Dr. Samina Ali in Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine about her experience of racism in our emergency department.
We all play a role in creating an antiracist environment.
For access to Language Line phone interpretation in 240 languages, please dial 844-909-3655. This is a direct line for the Stollery, so it will take you directly to the language selector with no need to enter the six-digit client ID. The language selector is being updated to reflect the most used languages at your site, so you will now hear “press 1 for Arabic, press 2 for Punjabi, press 3 for other”. Telus is having technical issues with the old number and we don’t have a timeframe for when this will be fixed.
