As of July 2025, we will have every learner working in a Competence by Design (CBD) curriculum and our General Pediatric Residency is thrilled for how this approach can contribute to the delivery of high-quality educational delivery, enhanced learner feedback and mentorship with the ultimate goal of developing the best pediatric clinicians. By empowering learners to more fully engage in their education, CBD uses time as a resource rather than the basis for progression. Given the complexity of a general pediatric consulting practice the training program is four years in duration and CBD has reinforced the importance of a full four years.
The General Pediatric Residency Program is a four-year training program: Transition to Discipline, Foundations, Core and Transition to Practice. Each stage has a series of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and milestones based on required competencies. These EPAs and milestones create more targeted learning outcomes and involve more frequent, formative assessments within the clinical workplace to ensure our residents are developing and receiving feedback on their skills they need. Our program is fortunate to have national leaders in our postgraduate leadership mentoring us in this process. Our program will continue to undergo the accreditation process and lead to Royal College approved certification. Within a CBD program, all EPAs (documented within an electronic portfolio unique to the University of Alberta), stage promotions and the decision for readiness for the Royal College examination must be successfully achieved for trainee program completion. Independent practice is a decision licensed separately, with certification in Pediatrics provided by the Royal College. Training completion is a certificate provided by our program at the end of program requirements being met. Exam eligibility is determined during Core stage of training.
