Red Deer is in central Alberta and about the mid-point between Edmonton and Calgary on Highway 2. The population of Red Deer is 100,000+, which makes it the third most populous city in Alberta. Located on the Red Deer River, it is home to oil, grain and cattle production.
Once a collection of homesteads and trading posts, Red Deer was incorporated into a town in 1901 and has since grown into the thriving city it is today. The city has all the amenities one would expect including schools, hospitals / health centres, libraries, museums, transit and more....
The pediatricians in Red Deer serve the population of the Central Alberta Zone, which includes up to 350,000 people. This is a young population with a lot of children. Within the hospital, there is a Level 2 - 17 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which can manage babies down to 32 weeks gestational age, short term invasive and non-invasive ventilation, central lines, TPN and EEG monitoring. There is also a 15 bed pediatric inpatient unit that can manage a wide range of medical illnesses, including Hi-Flow oxygen therapy and provide continuous monitoring of children in hospital.
The outpatient clinic is conveniently located across the street from the hospital and manages a wide variety of clinical illnesses including helping to manage the outpatient diabetes education program for Central Alberta.
"We are proud of the wide variety of clinical illnesses we can manage in Red Deer and feel that we can provide a positive experience to help empower the general pediatrician to feel comfortable working outside of a tertiary hospital and without subspecialists. Residents would be expected to work in the hospital (including on-call work), and the clinic. Our group of pediatricians is very interested in teaching and working with residents of all levels. We work with the pediatric residents from Edmonton and Calgary, and local Red Deer-based Family Practice residents. We strongly encourage as many residents as possible to come and work with us!" - Dr. Kyle McKenzie, Preceptor
