Pediatric Residents get 2 blocks of elective per academic year, in second and third year of residency. In fourth year, residents have 1 block of elective time. This is a great opportunity to explore general pediatrics in a different center or catchment. It allows flexibility with your schedule to choose your own adventure; reach out to your program or program directors.
Often, residents find it useful to use their elective time to do a rotation in a subspecialty they are interested in, since residents have to think early on in training about the Subspecialty CaRMS Match that occurs in the winter of third year. When choosing your elective, please keep in mind that whatever you do can count towards the Royal College Specialty Training Requirements in Pediatrics.
Some residents, in third and fourth year, choose to do international electives. Our PGME office needs at least 6 months' notice to process the papers for all international electives (this includes electives to the U.S.)
Please complete the linked Google form to communicate your confirmed elective plans with the program.
Please reach out to the individual contact to inquire about elective opportunities!
It is important to understand the process for post graduate electives for the institution you are hoping to go to (check their PGME website for specifics). Most institutions will require a letter of good standing from the home program / program director.
When asking Program Administration for a letter of good standing for your elective, it is important to provide as much information as possible. We need the following information before a letter can be completed:
Completed PGME Out-Going Elective form which includes:
What the elective is (General Pediatrics, Subspecialty (PedsID, PedsCardio), etc)
Preceptor Name & credentials (full name)
Mailing address
Email address
We have compiled a document of tips to make your elective experience rewarding and safe. Please take the time to review:
Due to the fact that you can do any rotation as an elective, many residents inquire as to the difference between elective and selective time. It's quite simple: Elective rotations are CTU call free blocks whereas Selective rotations are subject to doing CTU call. There is still the possibility that you may be asked or required to do call on your elective time at your elective location outside of Edmonton; this would be an arrangement made between you and your elective preceptor.
