Academic Half Day takes place each Wednesday afternoon from 12:15 – 4:15 p.m.
This is protected time for residents and the expectation is that everyone attends these sessions, unless you are:
Post-call
Vacation
Away Elective
Attendance: You are required to document your Attendance on One45. We review attendance during our EVAP (evaluations and promotions) committee meetings in December and May.
Evaluations: Timely resident evaluations (within 6 weeks) of AHD topics and presenters is mandatory. Each Academic Half Day session will be evaluated. Session presenters put a lot of time and effort into creating a educational presentation. It is important that each evaluation is filled out with thought filled and constructive feedback. It is not appropriate to fill out an evaluation if you were not in attendance. Phrases such as "I was not in attendance" or " Was not there" are not helpful to the presenters and not appropriate, and can not be removed from the composite reports we run for our presenters. Please remember that our session presenters use these reports in their portfolios for their own evaluation and promotions.
Curriculum: Follows a three year cycle. It is expected that residents pre-read prior to each half day to facilitate better integration of learning. Sessions will be case based, didactic, interactive, or simulations Teams of presenters or individual presenters will deliver academic sessions which will endeavor to cover the CanMEDS Roles:
Medical Expert
Communicator
Collaborator
Leader
Professional
Health Advocate
Scholar
Exams: VOSCE, OSCES and Written Exams are scheduled and built into AHD.
Other: Senior residents will be expected to contribute to the teaching at AHD, by providing one 20 minute presentation on a general topic during R1 orientation "Boot Camp", in collaboration (ideally) with a faculty mentor. Some academic half days are reserved for team building activities, as well as resident well-being.
Presentations: Any presentations or articles relating to topics reviewed during AHD, that are shared with administration, can be found on the Presentations page.
