Pavement

Under the road surfaces, the pavement layers must be defined. Normally, when creating a road task, the pavement below it is already defined.

The pavement dialog together with the detailed pavement description helps form the pavement layers to suit your design.

The Pavement dialog can be started from:

MOUS_ICO Novapoint > Road task > Design > Pavement

MOUS_ICO Cross-section Viewer > Right-click a pavement layer

Procedure

Following are the key steps for pavement description using this function:

Note: Ensure that the correct pavement template is active before describing/modifying the pavement.

Tip: With the Cross-section Viewer, open and modifying/describing the pavement description and using Apply shows changes immediately for the open cross-section.

The dialog is divided into different parts. The top half of the dialog is static, while the bottom half changes according to the chosen tab. For documentation on the tabs, please see the links at the bottom of this documentation page.

The upper part of the dialog

Pavement templates

The leftmost pane lists the pavement templates. To apply any kind of pavement to the road model, at least one pavement template must be created. Select the appropriate template and define the layer thickness in the pavement, inner slope, gradual layers, rehabilitation, and median.

Note: Ensure that the correct template is active before describing/modifying the pavement.

It is possible to copy/paste/rename/delete the template to have a more specific name.

Applying a Template to Sections

Next to the Pavement Templates we have the definition for where the different templates are to be used. The use of the different templates needs to be defined in two columns, one for situations of Soil cut and fill, and one for situations with Rock cut.

Depending on the models interpretations of terrain and subsurfaces it will apply one column or the other. The interpretation is stored in the Soil/Rock usage dialog.

To specify where to apply the templates we use the From and To chainages, and then specify what template to use. A pavement template can be used in multiple locations. The system also allows the user to apply the same template in both Soil/Fill or Rock situations.

A gap in the sections will create a longitudinal wedge. The difference between the templates will be interpolated where possible.

Soil/Rock usage

For each computed section the terrain and subsurface situation is analysed and the model adds a new entry to the dialog. The list is used as input to chose the appropriate pavement in that particular section.

NOTE: As the list is editable, it is not cleared between each build.

The following sub-grade conditions can occur:

The standard condition is that the program will propose a rock type when the cross-section is a pure rock cut (condition 2 above). For all other conditions, a soil type will be used.

Insert Edge

For Insert Edge with leftwards/rightwards slope, see Insert Edge in Pavement.

When changes have been done to the road pavement description press Apply or OK to save the changes.

Calculate the road model to update the resulting model.

Properties

NOTE: Available on Road tasks version 2.1 and above.

The Properties refers to how to show the Layer Properties in the dialog. By default it will be set to 'Partial'.

The Config-button allows the user to configure the properties to expose on the pavement layer definitions.

For more information, see Layer Properties.

The lower part of the dialog

This part of the dialog will change to show content related to the different tabs:

Pavement | Inner slope | Gradual layers | Rehabilitation | Median | Properties

It is also possible to do a Detailed Pavement description if needed.
