Students are required to receive research advising from their academic supervisor and advising from their co-supervisor according to their area of research, and earn 30 or more credits for courses (32 or more credits for students who choose to conduct the research paper in the Graduate Schools of Global and Regional Studies, Course of Regional Studies (only for students enrolled in or before AY 2019) and International Tourism Management Studies).
When selecting and determining courses to take, students are required to receive advising from their academic supervisors. (For the determination of academic supervisors.) New students are required to determine their academic supervisors through discussions with the instructor from whom they wish to receive research advising about their research proposals.
Since how to take courses varies depending on the graduate school and course to which they belong, students are required to carefully read the “Completion requirements” section and the “Course requirements” section provided in each course curriculum.
Students are allowed to take courses offered by partner universities (see "Auditing Student System under the Agreement of the Tokyo Metropolitan Graduate School Consortium"), and other courses of our university when their academic supervisors consider this necessary for research advising. Moreover, credits you earned from courses taken through the above-mentioned method, together with credits which will be recognized as “Recognition of credits” that have already been earned, may be counted toward the completion requirements up to a maximum of 20 credits.
The application period for the recognition of credits earned at graduate schools of Toyo University or other universities (including credits earned as a non-degree student) before entering the graduate school of Toyo University is the course registration period of the semester in which you enter the university. For details, please refer to the "Approval of Previously Earned Credits".
When taking courses offered by other graduate schools and courses, students are required to gain approval from their academic supervisors and instructors in charge of the relevant courses after confirming the details on necessary procedures at the Education Affairs Section for Graduate Schools.

A syllabus describes the content to be taught (outline), learning goals (knowledge/skills students can gain from studying the subject), teaching method and content of each class, grading method and criteria, textbooks, and required preparation and review. This information is provided to students in advance.
Please note that if you wish to view faculty profiles, do not use the above page; instead, access them through the Syllabus page on ToyoNet-G.
Students will be graded for the courses that they have registered through class attendance, examinations or other measures. Students who get passing grade can receive the prescribed credits.
Grades are evaluated as described below.
Grading criteria of Toyo University Graduate Schools are as follows.
“Learning goals” mentioned above refer to those described in the syllabus for the relevant subject.
To earn credits for a registered subject, you must attend at least two-thirds of all classes and pass the prescribed examinations (including assignments and in-class exams).
"Ineligible for grading" will be indicated on a grade report when grading is impossible due to poor attendance (failure to attend at least two-third of the classes), unsubmitted papers, or failure to take exams.
Besides grades in the above table, a grade of T (abbreviation of Transfer) will be indicated as a passing grade when a subject taken at another institution abroad or in Japan is accepted at Toyo University.
The academic performance of students is assessed in a comprehensive manner based on their remarks in classes, responses to assignments, daily commitment to classes and results, and other factors.
*When the academic performance of students cannot be assessed due to their poor class attendance, failure to take examinations, failure to submit reports, or other reasons, they are considered ineligible for assessment, and a "*" mark(ineligible for assessment: failure)is given as their grade. In addition, a "T" (Transfer) may be used as a passing grade in order to recognize credits for study abroad, study at other universities, and credits already earned prior to enrollment etc.

The GPA (Grade Point Average) is widely used by universities in Japan and abroad as an indicator to measure a student’s academic performance. When a student completes a subject, the student is assigned a letter grade. Each letter grade awarded has an associated numeric grade point value ranging from 0.0 to 4.3. The GPA is the average of grade points per credit for all subjects taken. At Toyo University Graduate Schools, this GPA system will apply to students enrolling in AY2026 or later.
The subjects included in the GPA calculation are those required for graduation, while qualification subjects and free-elective subjects that are not part of the graduation requirements are not included.
The grades included in the GPA calculation are S, A, B, C, D, E, and * (asterisk): a "T" grade is excluded from the GPA calculation.
If a student repeats a failed subject and receives a passing grade, the new grade will be used in the GPA. (This dose not count as credits to be included in the "total number of registered credits" which is the denominator for calculating the GPA.)
The GPA is rounded to the second decimal place. (The third decimal place is rounded off.)
