You will be able to find a recap of what we learned the previous week, homework assignments, and resources for parents such as the school calendar and handbook.

From the student view, your child can change how their monster looks, practice typing, draw digital images, and submit photos to me.

Please keep in mind you do not have to opt into the paid portion of ClassDojo to do any of the things required for class.

Recap of the week of September 13th- September 17th

Bible Study - We read Genesis 27; 28:10-22. Even though Jacob sinned by tricking his father and stealing his brother's blessing, God had a plan for things to work out for the best. God comes to us with forgiveness and grace, assuring us that everything will happen as God wants. Bible Words for the week: "Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens." Psalm 36:5

ELA/Skills - We have begun working on our phonics skills - associating letters with their sounds and blending sounds together to hear a new word. We are also really focusing on our penmanship. We reviewed the letter m and /m/ and practiced the letter a and /a/ like in cat. Students wrote the letters, listened for their sounds, made a picnic picture that fingerprint ants came to, and more.

Students are focusing on isolating and identifying different sounds, pencil strokes that will help with handwriting, and practicing positional words like in front of, on top of, below, left, right, and behind.

Students reviewed horizontal, vertical, diagonal, cup shaped, hump shaped, curved, zig zag, and wavy, spiral, loop, hook, cane, plus and x lines. They also worked on making sure that they are gripping their pencil/crayons properly with a tripod grip. It was great to see the students really focusing on how they hold a pencil and trying their best to work as neatly as they could.

Math - Students are working to tell what number comes next in number order. Sometimes the students had to fill in the missing numbers from 1 - 10 and other times the students had to figure out the missing number based on the number that comes before and after it.

Students have been working on calendar skills (month, year, days of the week, date, graphing daily weather, counting the days of school on a 100s chart and with tally marks). They have also worked with patterns. Not only identifying a pattern but also sharing what will come next in the pattern. Students also learned how to name a pattern by using letters and how to look at a letter named pattern and create it with colors or shapes. We have been working on our number writing skills as once these are mastered we will be able to better complete math activities through out the school year. We reviewed numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Social Studies - Students have been learning about Christopher Columbus and how he had a different plan to travel to the Indies by sailing West instead of around Africa. Students learned how the King and Queen of Spain agreed to pay for his ships and trip but he had to wait a while for them to agree to do it. Then, while he was on his journey the crew began to doubt him and wanted to turn back. Their mood changed when they finally spotted land.

*Students have also been working on different skills such as cutting, gluing, and the importance following directions. Students also had the opportunity to do some digital work on the iPads. If you haven't already, check out their work in their portfolio on ClassDojo.
