Supercritical Transformational Electric Power

Case Study: USA

U.S. Department of Energy flagship initiative, Supercritical Transformational Electric Power (STEP), recently successfully completed Phase 1 of a 10-megawatt (MW) Pilot Plant in San Antonio, Texas.

  • The STEP Demo pilot plant is a collaboration involving GTI Energy, SwRI, GE Vernova Advanced Research, and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory.

  • It is one of the largest demonstration facilities worldwide for supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) technology, which uses high-temperature sCO2 instead of water as a thermal medium in its power cycles, increasing efficiency by as much as 10%.

    • During this phase, the turbine reached full Operational Speed at 27,000 RPM, Operating at 500°C and 250 bar (high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-speed environment), and successfully generated 4 MWe of grid-synchronized power.

    • The data gathered is expected to refine the design and performance of future sCO2 systems.

Looking ahead, Phase 2, slated for 2025, will transition the plant to a Recompression Brayton Cycle (RCBC) and elevate the turbine inlet temperature to 715°C, aiming to further boost efficiency.

Forms of Energy

   Chemical Energy

Chemical Energy is a form of potential energy found within chemical bonds, atoms, and subatomic particles. Chemical energy can be observed and measured only when a chemical reaction occurs. Fuel contains chemical energy.

Electromagnetic

Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as Radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting.

 Electrical Energy

Electrical Energy is the movement of electrons (the tiny particles that makeup atoms, along with protons and neutrons). Electrons that move through a wire are called electricity. Lightning is another example of electrical energy.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Energy is Thermal Energy extracted from the Earth's Crust. It combines energy from the formation of the planet and from Radioactive Decay. Geothermal Heating, has been used since Paleolithic times.

Mechanical Energy

Mechanical Energy –(Kinetic Energy or Potential Energy) is the energy of either an object in motion or the energy that is stored in objects by their position. Mechanical energy is also a driver of renewable energy.

Nuclear Energy

Nuclear Energy is stored in the nucleus of atoms. This energy is released when the nuclei are combined (fusion) or split apart (fission). Nuclear power plants split the nuclei of uranium atoms to produce electricity.

Marine Tidal Energy

Waves are highly predictable and completely renewable, waves work 24/7, 365. Wave Energy can be an accessible, renewable, CO2-free power source, theoretical global output of wave power is 29,500 TWh/yr.

Radiant Energy

Radiant Energy or Electromagnetic Energy is a type of kinetic energy that travels in waves. Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR), is found in Electromagnetic Waves, known as light. Light is made of individual particles called photons, carrying a small "packet" of energy.

Energy Market Deregulation

Case Study: Texas, USA

Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) operates a unique wholesale electricity market for roughly 90% of the state of Texas.

  • ERCOT functions as an energy-only market, meaning generators are primarily paid for the electricity they produce and deliver to the grid.

  • ERCOT structure incentivizes efficient operation and timely investment in generation capacity, relying on price signals, especially during scarcity, to encourage investment.

Aggregate Distributed Energy Resource (ADER)

Texas Aggregate Distributed Energy Resource (ADER) Pilot Project, was established through Public Utility Commission of Texas Project No. 53911, to evaluate the participation of ADERs in the ERCOT Wholesale market.

  • ADER is a Resource consisting of multiple individual metered sites/Premises connected at the distribution system level that has the ability in aggregate to respond to ERCOT Dispatch Instructions.

  • Each phase of the pilot will be conducted in accordance with the applicable Governing Document for Aggregate Distributed Energy (ADER) Pilot Project.

Petroleum Refining Processes

Petroleum refining is the process of using Physicochemical Methods to turn crude oil into usable products like gasoline and diesel fuel. The process takes place in Three Basic Phases:

(1) Separation, (2) Conversion, (3) Treatment.

 Refineries Distillation Process

Distillation is a process used in oil refineries to separate crude oil into different components, called Fractions Distillation, based on their boiling points.

Project NOVA-4RE

Renewable Energy

Energy derived from Natural Sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Sunlight and Wind, for example, are such sources that are constantly being replenished. Renewable energy sources are plentiful and all around us.

The Sun is a Main-Sequence Star, and thus generates its Energy (Solar Flares) by Nuclear Fusion of Hydrogen into Helium. In its core, the Sun fuses 620 million metric tons of hydrogen each second
