ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
If you’re someone who prefers "learning by doing," the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is your golden ticket. It allows you to start your apprenticeship training while you’re still in high school, giving you a massive head start on your career.
In OYAP, you aren't just a student; you’re a registered apprentice. The hours you put in at your Co-op placement count toward your professional certification!
The TDSB offers different "flavours" of OYAP depending on how deep you want to dive into your chosen trade. Click the links below to view the detailed presentation slides for each:
1. Classic "Regular" OYAP (2 or 4 credit)
The most flexible option. You take a standard Co-op placement in a skilled trade (eg. automotive, culinary, or hair styling) and start logging your apprenticeship hours. Your teacher will lead this program and help place you with an appropriate supervisor.
2. PACE (Pre-Apprenticeship Co-Op, 4-Credit)
The PACE program pairs students with tradespersons who are employed by the TDSB. This pre-apprenticeship program can be taken in grade 11 or 12 but is designed to provide experience to grade 11 students in the construction sector and prepare them for entry into an apprenticeship-based OYAP in their grade 12 year. PACE students are NOT registered as apprentices.
3. STEP to Construction (4-Credit)
Students accepted to this outstanding program are assigned to a TDSB 'STEP' class with a designated teacher in one of the TDSB Technical high schools. They will conduct a month of pre-apprentice training and then be placed on a construction site to sample a variety of different trades within one co-op. Students are also enrolled in a complimentary Dual Credit course. Full attendance is mandatory.
4. STEP to Transportation (4-Credit)
Students accepted to this outstanding program are assigned to a TDSB 'STEP' class with a designated teacher in one of the TDSB Technical high schools. They will conduct a month of pre-apprentice training and then be placed with the TTC to sample a variety of different trades within one co-op. Students are also enrolled in a complimentary Dual Credit course. Full attendance is mandatory.
5. Accelerated OYAP (4 Credit, usually in grade 12 year)
Ready to go all-in? This program allows you to complete your Level 1 Apprenticeship Training at a local college or union training center while still in high school. You get the theory and the hours at the same time. Typically students will already have trade experience from Classic OYAP in their grade 11 year.
