D1.4 create an infographic about a data set, representing the data in appropriate ways, including in relative-frequency tables and stacked-bar graphs, and incorporating any other relevant information that helps to tell a story about the data
Infographics are used in real life to share data and information on a topic in a concise and appealing way.
Infographics contain different representations, such as tables, plots, and graphs, with minimal text.
Information to be included in an infographic needs to be carefully considered so that it is clear, concise, and connected.
Infographics tell a story about the data with a specific audience in mind. When creating infographics, students need to create a narrative about the data for that audience.
Note
Creating infographics has applications in other subject areas, such as communicating key findings and messages in STEM projects.
TEXT Content and Clarity: covers topic clearly with appropriate details and examples; the purpose and story of the infographic is clear
DESIGN and Layout: makes excellent use of font, color, graphics, effects, etc., to enhance the presentation
AUDIENCE: appropriately targets general audience through using appropriate language
GRAPHICS and Images: all graphics/images are related to the topic and make it easier to understand
NUMERACY and Data: all numbers and graphs are correctly presented; correct choice of graph and tables
COPYRIGHT: all text and images either original or comply with copyright law
Print these eight samples and post around the room.
Give groups of students post-it notes to write a Notice and Wonder for each sample (1-2 min per poster is enough)

Mr. Bancheri, a Grade 8 teacher from The Holy Trinity Catholic School, guided his students through a data and social justice inquiry. Grade 8 leaders led their food drive with collection, transportation, and data recording. From there, it was an opportunity to connect Math and Media to this project.
Some of the infographic topics included:
How the food drive impacted Toronto or Canada as a whole
% of donations by division
A podium chart for our school
A histogram-like bar graph
Grade 8 students in Ms. Silvestre's class researched a topic of their own interest and created infographics to share the information with their peers. Students included different statistical data, a graph, and the sources for their information.
