This year's novel for the Global Read Aloud is Padma Venkatraman's second-person memoir, The Bridge Home. The story follows Viji and her sister as they leave an abusive home to the streets of Chennai. Their adventure pulls the heart and explores the themes of religion, family, poverty, and dreams.

Melissa Beedle from Surrey, BC connected with us for a MysteryHangout session in September. It was great to meet her Grade 7 students through the power of video calling. We have already written our first penpal letters, and we've shared our first Flipgrid posts as well. Can't wait to connect with her students again!
Shawn Schwerman posted this beautiful resource from "Doing Good Together" of picture books that related to poverty, homelessness, and hunger. Along with the picture books are three PDF handouts that you can use to give students a service-minded introduction to the poverty, hunger, and homelessness situation in the United States.
Some of the questions to use:
How would you feel if you had to rely on a stranger to provide your lunch every day?
How does it feel when you are hungry and you have to wait to eat?
What are ways we could help those who are hungry?
What do you think would be the hardest part of not having a home?
If you did not have a place to live, what things would be most important to you? Where would you sleep? How would you stay clean?
What things are you grateful for? Are these things you need to live or things that are simply nice to have?

Courtney Thompson created a version of "Heads Up" , where students played in partners against another set of partners and passed one Chromebook around. These could also be printed and used as cards.
