This year's novel for the Global Read Aloud is Alan Gratz's triple historical narrative, Refugee. This fast-paced, action-packed novel depicts the journeys of three children in three different countries at three different times in history.

My posts on Facebook have been liked by a ton of teachers, so I wanted to create a space that housed all my resources and work into one place.
The hyperdoc on the right, also found here, was created as a companion teaching site to provide teachers with engaging and thoughtful activities for the students. Thank you to the original authors!
We partnered with Ms. Broman's Grade 8 class in Farmington, Minnesota, and we shared an introductory Skype session on Wednesday, October 10. They asked us 10 questions and we asked them the following 10 questions:
What are your favourite sports?
Have you heard of or tried Tim Hortons?
Who are your favourite singers?
What do you like to do in your spare time? Hobbies?
What’s your school like?
If you had to describe your class in one word, what would it be?
Who are the class clowns?
Have you ever been to Canada?
If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would you meet?
Have you ever tried poutine?
We hope to connect with them again over the next few weeks!
Here are the resources that I used the week before we started to read the book. Students analyzed the purpose, audience, media techniques, and bias of different videos.
We discussed the difference between a migrant and a refugee, and students analyzed a poem that talked about the life-changing decisions that refugees have to face when leaving their country.

Instructions for students: Go to GoogleClassroom and find the assignment for this. Your document would have your name in the title.
Our pacing was as follows:

Turkey taking care stopping Aegean Sea refugees
Refugees stream into Izmir ahead of winter weather
Some teachers are using sketchnoting as a way for students to visualize and summarize the readings. Here's an introductory video to show you why sketchnoting is helpful. It also breaks down the sketchnote into three important details:
1) Use of text
2) Use of images
3) Use of structure/organization
