Check out our new YouTube video suggestions! Also, remember the KLP Google Classroom for some links to other fun activities/books.
There are several YouTube videos available to help foster listening, spoken language, and literacy skills. Here are some of our favourites and activities you could do with your child.
Cosmic Kids Yoga is a channel that has TONS of kid-friendly yoga videos. Your child can follow along (aka "following directions"!!!) and also work on self-regulation strategies.
ArtforKidsHub is a wonderful YouTube channel for the budding artist out there. The artist gives step-by-step instructions (there's that "following instructions" again!) to create super cute cartoons! Your child can always pause the video and/or rewind if they need to hear an instruction again (those are strategies we use in the KLP to help with following directions - extra time, repetition). Enjoy!
Okay, okay, so it's a little bit warm now (finally!) to be thinking about a snowman. But, this catchy little song is GREAT for working on location words (prepositions) with your child. Sing along. Watch again, pausing the video to ask YOUR child, "Where is the snowman?" and see if they can answer. Extend this activity by making a snowman (out of an old toilet paper roll perhaps?) or using a toy to hide around your house. You and your child can take turns asking each other, "Where is the snowman?"
Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons was a favourite story "read" at the KLP. Your child might enjoy watching this again and singing along. This book targets language concepts like plurals (buttons) among others. Plus, it is really fun!
Some questions you might like to ask your child could be "How is Pete the Cat feeling?" or "How would YOU feel if you were Pete the Cat?" or "Why do you think his buttons keep falling off?!"
When you're done, you might ask your child to sing the song we sang in KLP (My zipper, my zipper, I zip up my zipper. My zipper, my zipper, I UNzip my zipper). Our song targeted different clothing vocabulary and the concept "un" as in unzip, unbutton, unbuckle.
Vowel Bat is another KLP favourite. We sing the song at KLP to help teach students the vowels and their sounds. Have your child sing along. The sounds used are the short vowel sounds.
a is "aaa" as in apple
e is "eh" as in egg
i is "ih" as in inuit
o is "aw" as in on
